When Theodore receives a postcard saying "I need to see you," he initially ignores it -- after all, it''s unsettling to open mail from one''s dead mother. But when another card arrives he can no longer put off the urgent meeting, and so Theodore treks to Cleveland to track his mother down. In this strange, thoughtful novel by Jim Krusoe, Theodore travels through the worlds of Uleene, a member of the all-girl biker club Satan''s Samaritans; art; rodent extermination; and sport fishing, all the while realizing that the line between life and death is remarkably fluid.

Annotation:
In this absorbing and bizarre novel from Jim Krusoe, a reticent man named Theodore Bellefontaine sets off in search of his dead mother after she apparently sends him a pair of postcards from beyond the grave. The correspondence is postmarked Cleveland, an "Erie" locale which Theodore will find to be every bit as disconcerting as the realms of the afterlife imagined in classic texts by Dante or Ovid. His guide through the city is Uleene, a member of an all-ladies biker gang, who helps Theodore negotiate some peculiar predicaments while he ponders the nature of life and death.

Praise

"[O]ur attraction to the narrator's story is based primarily on the charm of its telling....Krusoe's witty book, for all its drifting in the slipstream of realistic narrative, ends up being, in the old and honest and satisfying sense, familiar." - John Haskell 08/23/2009

"[T]his novel has the power to draw us into its bizarre world with bold and sometimes blatantly silly steps....[A]s Ted draws closer to uncovering the truth about his mother--and with it, the connective tissue between the living and the dead--Krusoe reminds us that the best prescription for bereavement might just be a healthy dose of action." - George Ducker 10/11/2009
