He Will Erase Your Past to Protect Your Future.
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays John Kruger, a U.S. Marshal who "erases" the lives and identities of people entering the Witness Protection Program. Kruger must protect an executive (Vanessa Williams) who's uncovered a deal to put a new superweapon in the wrong hands. It's a do-or-die assignment. So Kruger makes sure he does in a nonstop action spree that includes plunging from an airplane after his parachute, turning ravenous alligators into instant luggage, outbraining ultratech security and outbrawning killers with hypervelocity weapons. For power-packed excitement, Eraser is unstoppable.

"Arnold's back and beter than ever.  David Sheehan, CBS-TV
"...more heat, more crash, more burn [than "Die Hard," "True Lies" and "Mission: Impossible"].  Desson Thomson, The Washington Post
"...[Schwarzenegger] knows how to combine impossibly macho action plus attractive self-amusement into a reliable rhythm of ooof! and wink-wink.  Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
"Explosions, stunts, big guns, and Ah-nuld.  Michael Dequina, Mr. Brown's Movies
"...the script is taut and sure, salted with just the right amount of humor...ingenious and clever action sequences that don't need random fireballs to make the point.  Susan Lambert, Box Office Magazine

Editor's Note
Muscle-bound, heavily-accented John Kruger is employed by the Witness Protection Program as an "eraser." In other words, he wipes out a witness's identity in order to save him or her from potential harm. One such person is beautiful Lee Cullen, who possesses vital information regarding super high-tech weapons -- and a government conspiracy connected to them. Krueger's job protecting Cullen will lead to some action-packed, death-defying adventures for the pair, as gunmen and goons and even alligators seem to be waiting for them around every corner. Furthermore, a traitor within the Witness Protection Program is hell-bent on violently erasing Krueger himself.

Eraser is the latest in a growing number of "high tech" action flicks (The Net, Hackers, and Mission Impossible all fit into that category). It takes the usual chases, explosions, and shoot-outs, and places them in plot that involves all sorts of computerized and electronic gadgetry...Eraser will hearten the group of Schwarzenegger fans who have been depressed by their favorite star's ventures beyond the action realm...This is Arnold at his muscle-bound, gun-toting best, mowing down bad guys without taking much of a breather...There are some definite similarities between Eraser and Mission Impossible. Both involve betrayals and government cover-ups, both have plots that revolve around information contained on disks, both feature a break-in to a supposedly-secure installation, and both contain several high-energy action sequences. Ultimately, however, Eraser is marginally more enjoyable. Not only is Schwarzenegger a better action hero than Tom Cruise, but the plotline of this film, while far from a masterpiece of originality, isn't filled with the silly, convoluted twists that choked Mission Impossible. And, perhaps best of all, Eraser has a lot of delightfully corny dialogue (including Arnold calmly telling a dead alligator, "You're luggage"). - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
It helps to have a short attention span while watching ``Eraser,'' the new Arnold Schwarzenegger picture. Consider, for example, a sequence late in the film, where Arnold is shot through the left shoulder. He grabs his shoulder and grimaces. From the bullet's point of entry, we guess his shoulder bone is broken and there is a lot of muscle damage. Immediately afterward, Arnold is in a fight to the death with the villain (James Caan) on top of a shipping container that has been lifted high in the air by a crane. The heroine (Vanessa Williams) is also on the container, and she falls off. But Arnold is able to grab her out of the air. He holds her with his right hand, and supports the weight of both of them with his left hand and arm. That's a neat trick after a bullet has shattered your shoulder. But wait. If you think way back to the movie's second big action sequence, near the beginning of the film, Arnold and Vanessa are the targets of a nail bomb, which explodes, driving a spike completely through Arnold's right hand--the one he later holds Williams with...``Eraser'' is more or less what you expect, two hours of mindless nonstop high-tech action, with preposterous situations, a body count in the dozens, and Arnold introducing a new trademark line of dialogue (it's supposed to be ``Trust me,'' but I think ``You're luggage'' will win on points). - Roger Ebert
