This useless compilation of tired long winded whining does little else then to once again solidify this obsolete group's stench to be as strong as a porta-toilet left used and uncleaned for a month.

The music is timesless and distinct, there is enough similarity in Steve Augeri's voice to satisfy the most ardent Steve Perry fans (like myself). I would never say that this is the equal to the classic Journey albums such as Escape and Frontiers, but it is equal to, or better than Raised on Radio and Trial By Fire. Steve Augeri does not have the octive range of Steve Perry, but the new material more than makes up for this slight imperfection! The musicianship is remarkable, and the enthusiasm is evident in every track. To overlook this project would be a mistake. Let's face it, they wanted to record and tour, Steve Perry didn't. This new version of the band is very good, and live they are remarkable. Buy the disc, you won't be disappointed.

Now for an honest review:

Journey is not a band with a lot of depth lyrically. They never were. The master guitar rifts of Neal Schon and soaring vocals of Steve Perry are what define this band. That's what this compilation demonstrates.
Journey's best songs are those that weren't released as singles and doomed to overkill on endless Top 40 radio countdowns. That's the strength of this set. Classic rock staples such as "Stone in Love", "Good Morning Girl", and "Wheel in the Sky" are the strength of this set. These songs mixed with lower charting hits like "Send Her My Love" and "After the Fall" show that Journey had more talent than their Top 20 achievements suggest.
The album's weaknesses are the recent "When You Love a Woman" (jarringly out of place)and some of the band's misfires: "Separate Ways" and "Only the Young". (Of course, this chronicles the period where many fans will reminisce, "This is when Journey started to suck.")
Still, Schon's blistering guitar licks (His dexterity would put any modern era guitarist to shame.) with Perry's seemingly effortless arias made a sound that captured an era. Those who spent their adolescence with Journey playing in their tape decks, underscoring their most memorable moments, will know what I mean. This collection of major and minor hits, along with their best album tracks, capture and solidify Journey's significance in the 1980s as a major talent.
Essential Journey is a soundtrack for a generation that grew up with a tamer, but more sincere, version of rock and roll. Back then it meant something. It helped us to define ourselves at that particular point in time and we rocked with it. And isn't that what rock and roll is really about? Read More

The title says it all. The cream of the crop from one of rock's most enduring and successful bands. Hardcore Journey fans will want this because of the fidelity improvement; (the material is remastered from the original source tapes). Everyone else will want this because it's simply one of the best hits collections ever released. With new liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Wild, ESSENTIAL is over 130 minutes of music covering the group's 1978-1996 output. The classics ("Don't Stop Believin', "Who's Crying Now", "Faithfully") are known and loved by all, but it's the minor hits and album tracks that truly shine here. "Patiently" (a gorgeous ballad) and "Line Of Fire" (a boogie woogie crowd pleaser from the live CAPTURED) will make you want to purchase the original albums from which they hail, as will the beautiful "Good Morning Girl." From blistering, adrenaline-pumping rockers ("Any Way You Want It", "Chain Reaction", "Escape) to raise-your-lighter power ballads ("When You Love A Woman", "Open Arms") and everything in between (the reggae-ish "Baby I'm A Leavin' You) there isn't a bad cut here. The Journey continues...
Artist Overview
When one thinks of the archetypal power-ballad powerhouse Journey, it's hard not to automatically picture an arena full of fans hoisting cigarette lighters. While singer Steve Perry's voice was custom-made for Journey's heartbreaking love songs, guitarist Neal Schon had the hard rock chops to fire up their numerous melodic anthems, the combination making them one of the biggest bands of the 1980s. They started out as a prog-rock/fusion-oriented offshoot of Santana, but didn't break through until Perry was brought in to front the band in the late '70s. Nevertheless, after Perry's departure, the band eventually reunited and carried on with Perry soundalike Steve Augeri, playing for thousands of enraptured fans and recording new material.
