| Memphis Minnie (generally considered to be the best female blues guitarist of her day) recorded prolifically for almost 40 years, so no two-disc best-of is ever going to be utterly definitive. Still, this one does an excellent job of collecting her earliest, pre-electric work (the liner notes don't give any recording dates). Besides her best-known song, the often-covered (and like much of her oeuvre, slyly double-entendre) "Me and My Chauffer," highlights include a collaboration with her second husband Little Son Joe on the charmingly titled "Black Rat Swing," and a wonderful duet with singer Bumble Bee Slim on the dance tune "New Orleans Stop Time." | |
