The Roadmakers left only ruins behind -- but what magnificent ruins! Their concrete highways still cross the continent. Their cups, combs, and jewelry are found in every Illyrian home. They left behind a legend, too -- a hidden sanctuary called Haven, where even now the secrets of their civilization might still be found.

Chaka's brother was one of those who sought to find Haven and never returned. But now Chaka has inherited a rare Roadmaker artifact -- a book called A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court -- which has inspired her to follow in his footsteps. Gathering an unlikely band of companions around her, Chaka embarks upon a journey where she will encounter bloodthirsty river pirates, electronic ghosts who mourn their lost civilization, and machines that skim over the ground and air. Ultimately, the group will learn the truth about their own mysterious past.

From the Publisher:
When Karik Endine's expedition sets out to find the hidden sanctuary called Haven, no one believes he will return. The Roadmakers, the old people from before the 21st-Century Plague, left only ruins behind. However, Karik does return but alone, all of his team dead. When he dies, a rare artifact is found that inspires a restless young woman named Chaka to follow in his footsteps. Gathering together an unlikely band, Chaka and her comrades set out on an adventure-filled journey to discover the truth about their own mysterious past.

Annotation:
In the far future, Earth has been ravaged by plaques. The new medieval republic of Illyria is flourishing, but citizens often hear rumors of a place called Haven, where ancient technologies and artifacts are still intact. A young silversmith named Chaka organizes a quest to find Haven and the origins of a mystical book that has come into her possession.

Praise

Kirkus Reviews
"Solid characters and a consistently intriguing plot...an uplifting tale (compare David Brin's 'The Postman'), well up to previous standards." 03/15/1997

Science Fiction Chronicle
"There's humor and suspense and tragedy and adventure, and a clever little mystery to resolve in the closing chapters. This is one where you don't want to wait for the paperback." - Don D'Ammassa June 1997

San Francisco Chronicle Book Review
"Post-apocalypse stories are an enduring science fiction subgenre. Their appeal is easily understood, as they encode nostalgia, wonder and the unthinkable into a mythology of redemption and renewal. McDevitt doesn't break any new ground here, but his mastery of the form is impeccable. Reading 'Eternity Road' is like hearing a favorite piece of music played by a skilled artist." - Daniel Marcus 07/13/1997
