Editors Note
Note In this eerie science-fiction ghost story, an astrophysicist (Sam Neill), haunted by the memory of his wife's suicide, joins a rescue mission to salvage his life's work: the Event Horizon, a prototype spacecraft capable of faster-than-light travel that has been missing for seven years. Their arrival triggers contact with something beyond human experience--and more dangerous than ever imaginable. Similar in plot to Andrei Tarkovsky's eponymous screen adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's science-fiction novel SOLARIS, EVENT HORIZON provides some truly disturbing moments in its often potent combination of horror and sci-fi.

Review I went into Event Horizon expecting an Alien clone. However, although this film has successfully recaptured some of the look and claustrophobic feel of Ridley Scott's science fiction classic, that's where the similarity ends. Because, while Alien was tautly paced and deftly scripted, Event Horizon is a mess. This is one of the most chaotic movies that I have seen since 1996's nearly-incomprehensible Mission: Impossible. Half of what's going on is never explained, and what is explained, doesn't make much sense. And that's just the beginning of the problems encountered in director Paul Anderson's (Mortal Kombat) poorly executed endeavor.

Review Event Horizon opens with a lot of class. It has the detailed space vessels moving majestically against the background of stars, it has the deep rumble of the powerful drives, it has sets displaying persuasive technology, and it even has those barely audible, squeaky, chattering, voice-like noises that we remember from 2001: A Space Odyssey, which give you the creepy feeling that little aliens are talking about you.

Peter Stack, The San Francisco Chronicle Event Horizon produces an intense sense of visual involvement. The hallucinatory, almost 3-D-like scenes stick in the mind.
Stephen Holden, The New York Times The movie is Fishburne's bid to become a sci-fi action hero.
