As he did in his "New York Times"-bestselling novel "Earth," Brin takes on the rapidly accelerating rate of change in technology in a very human way. The novel brims with ideas about the future, and how humanity will--must--adapt to it.
From the Publisher:

Bestselling, award-winning futurist David Brin returns to globe-spanning, high concept SF with Existence. ||Gerald Livingston is an orbital garbage collector. For a hundred years, people have been abandoning things in space, and someone has to clean it up. But there's something spinning a little bit higher than he expects, something that isn't on the decades' old orbital maps. An hour after he grabs it and brings it in, rumors fill Earth's infomesh about an ?alien artifact.? ||Thrown into the maelstrom of worldwide shared experience, the Artifact is a game-changer. A message in a bottle; an alien capsule that wants to communicate. The world reacts as humans always do: with fear and hope and selfishness and love and violence. And insatiable curiosity.

Author Bio
David Brin
Following the archetypal model for a "hard" science fiction writer, Glen David Brin has a science background--he has a B.S. in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology, an M.S. in applied physics from U.C. San Diego, and a Ph.D. in space science. He has worked as an engineer at the Hughes Aircraft Company, given lectures on topics ranging from ecology to extraterrestrial life, and served on numerous advisory committees dealing about the "information superhighway." This background has infused his fiction-writing career, giving such books as his six-volume Uplift series, 1985's THE POSTMAN, and 1990's EARTH the kind of solid groundwork that has helped to propel them into the ranks of bestsellers, and won him numerous awards in the process. The first three books of the Uplift series--a complex story of assisted evolution on an interstellar scale consisting of SUNDIVER (1980), STARTIDE RISING (1983), and THE UPLIFT WAR (1987)--made Brin one of the most successful and popular, not to mention important, hard science fiction writers to appear on the scene. Subsequent works like the second group of three Uplift books, GLORY SEASON in 1993 and his award-winning, 1995 collection, OTHERNESS, have only served to increase his reputation.

"Brin's thoughtful, multilayered story explores a first contact scenario where every twist reveals greater peril." 04/09/2012
