Fantom is Fantastic!10/1/2012
I have had this hard drive for over 2 years. Never once had an issue! I love the Fantom fanless design and aluminum chassis. It stays very cool even after hours of use. I use mine to watch movies on my Playstation. It is very fast and quiet. I will most definitely buy more Fantom products.
I got this for backup of personal and work files. It works great. It sits in a box most of the time meaning that I don't have a lot of hours of use on it but it still works fine when I need to refresh my backups or pull files off it. I like the multiple interface options - that was a selling point.
I should have written this review a year of so ago. I am finally getting down to writing it. I do NOT have any positive feedback on the Fantom drive. I bought this external drive in Apr.2009 for use specifically as a backup of my files. I use the USB2.0 interface with Windows XP. (a) The first issue I noticed was that the USB connector on the drive side, provided by Micronet, did not fit snugly. (b) I have had the drive fail twice on me, and I lost all the backup both times. The first time, I sent the drive back to Micronet, they replaced/repaired it and sent me a formatted drive. After a couple of months, the drive failed again (this was about 4 months ago). Since I am not covered by a warranty, I am writing this off as a dead investment. I see other near perfect reviews of this product, and I guess I am the unlucky one. My confidence in Micronet products is eroded to such a low point that I will not buy or recommend products made by Micronet.
THE LAST HARD DRIVE YOU'LL EVER NEED12/4/2010
This Fanthom Drive is a compact, aluminum-clad hard disc drive with a few exceptional features. First, there is no fan noise because there is no fan! The drive itself makes the usual sounds which are distinct and unobjectible. To further indicate that The Fanthom is doing its thing, there is a bright delta blue led which blinks while booting, reading and writing. In all, this handsome drive perfectly compliments the Macintosh Imac series and is otherwise sleek, sexy and portable. Another great feature is that the drive accepts all three modern connectors (as opposed to other drives which offer USB only for this price point). This Fanthom drive offers a hefty 1 Tetra-gig capacity which makes it perfect for a fixed back-up drive for use with Time Machine or other auto backup programs. The significant drop in price is evidence that the magnet disc drive is in its final days. This in no way makes it a obsolete. With the trend leaning towards micro flash drives which are sure to replace internal external discs in the future. The Fanthom is a compact, high capacity gem that provides an ideal storage/backup solution. For this fantastic price, you may want to buy more than one. Mine has been in use for over 6 months with nary a complaint. If you need an external hard drive for achieving, transport or back-up, the 1 T Fanthom is an excellent choise.
Works well - WinXP11/28/2010
Purchased for the Firewire connection - this is the second external Firewire drive hooked into my system. I plugged it in, powered up and for some reason I had to restart Windows - since then it has worked well - very quiet - used in tandem with a WD 500GB Firewire external drive. System is WinXP - system is pretty much plain vanilla setup - nothing special - happy with purchase and, as always, very happy with Buy.com
Really nice, but...10/20/2010
This product was a snap to set up. However when my PC goes to sleep it no longer sees the drive. I must cycle power on the drive for it to reconnect. I believe it is a know issue since it is mentioned in the FAQ area of its manual.
bought two of these and had problems with both reb9/20/2010
The product is excellent. I wish I could say the same of the rebate. Be very vigilant with your rebates through promoprocess when purchasing using paypal on buy.com. Make sure that you read the terms and conditions (especially the one mentioning that the address on the rebate form has to match the paypal ship to address) as no notifications are sent telling you that the rebate has been declined.
Very Nice Drive10/26/2009
I purchased this drive specifically to be able to backup my notebook with Norton Ghost. I am running Norton Ghost 14.0 on a Dell XPSM1530. Under Vista Home Premium. I wanted a backup that was reliable since Vista is NOT!!! But that's enough Vista Bashing. The drive is very quiet. It has no fan. It is HEAVY for a 1TB HD. I suspect the weight is the metal in the chassis that must be the heat sink. I had it running via USB in minutes. It comes with a Firewire cable too but it is the 6 pin variety and this notebook has the smaller Firewire cable. I did a quick reformat for NTFS and that went well. Backups to the drive were very swift I thought. It took roughly 45 minutes to backup 60GB which is far better than backing up to my NAS even over a 1GB ethernet connection. It is advertised as a 1 TB drive. Depending upon your definition of a TB you are either satisfied or not. Being an oldtimer I am not quite happy as a Terrabyte to me is 1024 GB which is 1024 MB but it is more like 1000GB by 1000MB. I'm not going to cry about it though as this 1000GB drive is 50,000 times larger than my first HD way back on DOS 3.0 and cost 1/4th what I paid for that 20MB HD. In a couple years I expect that SDD drives will take over and eliminate platter HD's for most everything. If you want a nice drive, then get it.
Bought this unit for storing photos, music and video files. It works perfectly and is very fast as well as quite.

Fantom 1TB USB/FW/eSATA External HD3/31/2009
I got a fabulous deal on this drive - too good to pass up - an am using it as my Time Machine drive in Mac OS 10.5. I upgraded the internal HD in my MacBook Pro to 320 GB in December. After that, my old Time Machine quickly became almost filled up and I needed more space. Thus far (~3 weeks) this drive has been excellent for the task it was purchased for. I keep it connected to my laptop when I am at my desk. It is quiet, cool, and small. I have gone into TM and recovered files with no problem. Thus far, I am using the FW interface, but it is nice to have the other two. Based on my experiences thus far, I would recommend this HD.
