Fantom GreenDrive II - 1TB USB 2.0 & eSATA External Hard Drive (includes eSATA cable) - 2 Year Warranty! - GDII1000EU - Features NTI Shadow 4 with Ninja Backup Software
|GreenDrive II is Fantom Drive’s answer to energy
reduction and environmental responsibility by
utilizing up to 40% less power without sacrificing performance.|
The GreenDrive II employs variable speed disk mechanisms that increase their rotational velocity in response to host demand, resulting in virtually no performance degradation vs. a 7200RPM disk.
Additionally, no lead is used in any component of the GreenDrive II, making it Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (ROHS) as well as California Electronic Waste Recycling Act compliant. As a matter of fact, even the soy-based inks used to print the box are environmentally friendly.
GreenDrive yields an average drive power savings of 4-5 watts over competitors’ drives while maintaining solid performance. That power savings equates to reducing CO2 emission by up to 60 kilograms per drive per year – the equivalent of taking your car off the road for 14 days each year, and saving up to $14 per year in electricity costs depending on the power-on-hours.
Great buy in less price...2/22/2012
I bought 1 TB in very less price and performance is really good. It's good product if you want to leave this drive at home, difficult to carry ...!
Only lasted a Month!1/4/2012
It became corrupt after only a Month! I noticed first that my computer did not want to recognize the drive on a few instances but after turning it off, unplugging and replugging, it eventually was seen under "my computer" then, all of a sudden, it no longer showed up. I could hear the drive spin but never was able to open. took it to Staples and they tested it and told me my drive was corrupt. Lost all my pictures I had taken ! I was so upset I threw it against the wall (voided the warranty). I am so paranoid now that I have not replaced the drive (don't trust any portable drives anymore) and now back up my photos to dvd.
Nice casing and finish. Decent performance and no issues of reliability so far. Overall a great hard drive.
Good while it lasts...9/15/2011
The drive worked well until it quits after 1 year. It probably was a head crash failure since I could not reformat nor recover any data. Since it was still under warranty (2-year) I am waiting on Micronet service to provide a solution and will update on how that turns out. I also own a Fantom Gforce drive which has an aluminum case and that is still working well. This green drive has a plastic case and it might be running too hot causing a premature failure?
I love this Drive, small quite and does what it's told and it uses not fans and turns of when not used. I store all kinds of thing on it. Sofware great for storing movies pictures and music if you have lots of them and more. Good service speedy shipping.
Fantom Rebates Suck10/21/2010
Bought this drive to use with my Charter DVR and it works perfectly, expanding DVR capability by a factor of 10. Setup was easy and performance is excellent. Fan is quiet and only occasionally noticeable. I scored this a "1" for overall satisfaction because of the rebate: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT BASED UPON GETTING A REBATE !!! The consolidator for Fantom continues to reject the rebate because my name and adress "don't appear on the receipt." Complete BS, of course. They appear to have a different definition of "receipt" than the rest of the world. Obviously a delaying tactic to make me go away and keep my $20. Buy.com and Fantom both should be embarrased over this, as it appears to be a widespread practice for Fantom rebates.
Installed and working well for a couple weeks. No problems. Seems very well made.
Trouble Free Hard Drive8/24/2010
This is the 2nd Fantom hard drive I have, the 1st one I have now about 10 months and it has been trouble free. The price was right, then free shipping, what more could you ask for?????The only bad part is the rebate, time will tell if it comes.
Does what it says it does, free software works well too. And the fact that it uses less power is good.
No fan but not quiet6/12/2010
I read all of the reviews here and every one says that its quiet but I get a little noise on every access (especially when copying from a slower drive) which is a little annoying. My other backup drives: 2TB WD book, and 1 TB La Cie have less noise than this. Also all of my portable HDs are noiseless compared to this. I like the drive overall and the esata I/F is certainly faster than USB.
works great, don't count on the rebate10/12/2009
I have absolutely no complaints about this drive. It doesn't get hot, it's quiet, and there's no annoying light to indicate it's on. If you are considering this purchase, do so on the merit of the reviews, not the fact that there's a rebate. The rebate company is rumored to be awful (seriously, Google them and read the results yourself!). I purchased this drive in early August, sent the rebate towards the end of August. At the time, the rebate website said allow 5-6 weeks for processing. This week starts week 8. The website now says that processing takes 10-12 weeks and that a status update should be available after 6-7 weeks. I'm not holding my breath. At least I'm very pleased with my purchase! :)
Works as advertised so far9/27/2009
Bought this as a back up after I learned the hard way about my laptops harddrive crashing. So dont put it off any longer and get one of these. Its light and doesnt get hot. Windows Vista had no problems recognizing it. The instruction tell you remove it through windows before shutting it down. Instructions dont tell you about the remove hardward icon. It lists another icon that wasnt in my tray. Maybe thats for XP but I had to use the remove hardware icon. Then it will tell you when you can remove it safely. Also for some reason I could not get the remove safely message. It was telling me the drive was in use. I ended it up having to disconnect it regardlessly. Shut the laptop down, and then waited til the drive stopped spinning. Then unplugged the drive cable. After that I get the message like I should. Have only been in used for a couple of weeks. Only backed up some pics, so I cant comment on the reliability of the unit.
I bought this ext. drive to keep my family videos and pictures backed up and also for future HD video and maybe a disk image when I get around to it. It is really plug and play. Hooked it up and started tranferring files. I did not use the software that came with it. The usb cable could be a little longer, but was not a problem as I do not leave the drive running and only turn it on when tranferring files at the end of day and keep the drive within arms reach. This is just the 3rd week I have had it, so cannot comment on the performance over the long run.
Nice External HD9/2/2009
Computer recognized it right off the bat. Does not get hot and it's quiet since there is no fans. Using it as a video library with my Playstation 3 now.
Works as advertised8/13/2009
I bought the Fantom GreenDrive for two purposes: 1) To store periodic image backups of my PCs for recovery purposes 2) To store daily backups of my important files. This product provides the storage and performance to do both efficiently. The drive is discovered automatically by both Vista and XP systems and comes preformatted and ready for use. I use the free version of Macrium Reflect to do the disk image backups. The NTI Shadow software that comes with the drive is great for doing the daily file backups quickly. I can think of no reason why anyone would not be satisfied with this product.
Just awesome drive - Software is worthless though8/8/2009
On the Mac, Just initialize it, and make it a Time Machine backup disk. If you need more flexibility, use another backup utility. I was not impressed with the Shadow software that came with the drive. I now have 3 of these drives, and they are the best drives I have! They are quiet, they stop spinning when they are not in use, They wake up quickly when they are accessed again, and they run extremely cool, even while they are being heavily used.
Working great for six months now.7/21/2009
Not that it is a spectacular feat, but I've had the 1TB GreenDrive for six months now and have not had any problems with it. No problems getting it started right out of the box. Pure Plug 'n Play connectivity whenever we take it from the desktop and transport it with the laptop. We use the GreenDrive as our movie storage drive, and I wasn't too happy with the USB connection speed. I put an eSATA card into my desktop and connected the GreenDrive that way. MUCH BETTER!
Fantom GreenDrive II - 1TB USB 2.0 & eSATA Externa7/11/2009
This is the 2nd Drives that I purchased to replace the 1st FANTOM drive 250gb has crashed for about over a year. When pluged it in into the USB port the drive got really HOT and USB cable smoked. I fingured that probably I got a BAD USB cable. Overall... It is a nice drive and nice design...
Best External Hard Drive I've ever owned6/1/2009
I've owned several external hard drives of all kinds. And this drive beats them all with Price/Storage/Performance. With it's Fan-less design, I no longer have to turn the drive off like I've had to with other external hard drives. Simply the best Bang for your buck. I wouldn't buy anything else but this if I need more storage memory. I've had this drive for over 4 month and I rarely turn my computer/drive off.
Works with my Time Warner HD DVR5/19/2009
I purchased this drive with the hopes of expanding my storage space on my TimeWarner DVR (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD). Extremely east to set up. Just did these steps: - Turned DVR off - Connected the external drive via the esata cable - Turned on external drive, then cable box - Message came on the TV screen saying it found the drive and asked if I wanted to format it. - After format completed, I rebooted the cable box and that was it. My percent used went from 78% down to 11%. I've been using this drive for about two weeks now and have had no problems at all. Everything seems to work (pause, reverse, fast forward, etc.).
Good drive - Bad Ninja5/15/2009
Drive works exactly as I would have expected. I did have to return the first one after I tried to use the Ninja software to encrypt the data. When trying to use the Ninja (perhaps the Chris Farley incarnation) on the drive, it made the PC blue screen when formatting, then made the drive unreadable. Finally, after subsequent repair attempts, the drive ended up spontaneously rebooting my PC upon USB connection. Second drive works great after NOT using Ninja software. NTI Backup software seems to work well.
Drive works as was expected. I am using this to backup servers at work. Previously was done by a 6x80GB tape drive. I am sure I am using way less electricity now. Hooked up to USB and ran with no problems.
Good drive forgot the software5/12/2009
I purchased both the barebones version of this drive and this version that had the eSata cable and the backup software. The drive is excellent but save the money and buy the barebones version and buy your own eSata cable. The backup software is almost useless if you really want to make an image copy of your drive(s). If you just want to back up you application data, it might be acceptable but this isn't Norton Ghost (nor did I expect it to be). Again, hard drive itself on eSata has performed flawlessly.
Very Efficient Unit and Easy to Use5/10/2009
This external drive is very quiet and fast. I was able to set it up within minutes and able to back up my 250 gig hard drive within 10 to 15 minutes! I was looking for a "big name" external hard drive and found this one a a MUCH better price! I am very pleased with this purchase from buy.com
Simple to set-up & use4/28/2009
This External Hard Drive is simple to set up and use, I was using it under 5 minutes. Very quiet. I have recommended the device to several friends and co-workers. Kudos to Fantom Green Drive !
Great Product, but not for me4/28/2009
Hi: I bought this great green fantom drive because I have a Mac laptop with a broken internal drive, and the housing on my external drive has been broken for 2 years. So, basically I had a laptop in 2 pieces and one of those pieces in 2 pieces. So, solution, buy a 1TB Green Drive. Problem: I couldn't start up the Mac using the USB 2 connection. So, I went ahead and bought a 160Gb internal, and now I use this quiet, great drive strictly for mass storage and backup -- it's great, but I would have loved it even more if it had a FireWire 800 option.
