||Friendly sheepdog Farmer Dale picks up a succession of hitchhikers in his red pickup truck, including an accordion-playing goat, a singing sheep in a straw hat, and a roller-skating pig (they're on their way to the local talent competition, and dislike each other on sight). The bouncily rhythmic text depicts the trip: "The pickup bounced and shimmied./ It groaned and squeaked and wheezed./ It spit a thankful cloud of smoke/ and started with a wheeze." Eventually the truck, overloaded by all the passengers, grinds to a halt. Farmer Dale gets out and pushes, but to no avail; he needs the assistance of those haughty hitchhikers. Full-color crayon-and-watercolor illustrations accompany the text.
