At-A-Glance Film Reviews 8 of 10
[His] Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell star in this Howard Hughes produced film that is part mystery, part noir, but can't really be called either. Mitchum plays a gambler who is offered $50,000 to leave the country for a year but isn't told why. The title doesn't have much to do with the story...an ultimately satisfying film. But the dialogue is sometimes a little too clever for its own good, and Vincent Price's role in the end is hilarious but overlong. Still, Mitchum is always fun to watch, and there's some interesting intrigue and a rousing action climax to enjoy.

[Border] Border Incident is a routine crime melodrama that is helped by the earnest way it's presented. Anthony Mann (Desperate, Side Street) directs from a story by John C. Higgins. It was modeled on the semidocumentary style Mann used in T-Men. The film is uplifted from its ordinariness by the use of deep focus compositions and the highlighting of the shadowy agricultural landscape of southern California by John Alton's b/w photography, who also worked on T-Men. The success of Mann and Alton's collaboration making pics for Eagle-Lion earned them the chance to work for MGM. - Dennis Schwartz

[Lady] This is the only mainstream feature ever to have been shot in its entirety with the subjective camera. Which means that you, the viewer, sees everything just as the hero Philip Marlowe does. Every so often the camera pauses by a mirror and looking at you in the reflection is Robert Montgomery, who also directed, for it is he who is playing Marlowe...It's an original idea, but the general treatment of Raymond Chandler's private-eye thriller is not. - George Perry
