A car dealer who has never left his Michigan hometown and his younger sister, a brilliant astrophysicist, reunite in this magnificent achievement by "one of the finest of American writers ("Boston Globe").
From the Publisher:
Hugh Welch has cared for his little sister Dorsey ever since they were children, when Dorsey looked at him as though he were a god. But when Dorsey returns to their small Michigan hometown with a successful career as an astrophysicist and a happy family life, Hugh, who has a long habit of worrying about his sister, realizes that it's his own life he has to cure, not Dorsey's. As they explore their complicated history over one hot Fourth of July weekend, they'll come to terms with the experiences that put such distance between them and discover the imperfect love that ties them as siblings.
A novel that moves backwards in time, from present to past, to tell the story of Dorsey Welch, an astrophysicist studying the origins of the universe, and her brother Hugh. Hugh remains in the small-town house where they were born, while Dorsey travels to California and becomes a wife and mother as well as a successful scientist.
Author Bio
Charles Baxter
Baxter received his B.A. from Macalester College and a Ph.D. from SUNY Buffalo. He has been a professor of English most of his adult life. His first collection of fiction won the AWP Award for short fiction in 1984.

"Charles Baxter...has not only come across an interesting idea for an experimental novel, but has managed to translate it into convincing fiction...In rewinding his story, the author provides a fascinating illusion of consolidation...The novel moves over everyday details with the inexorable, contrary tug of memory." - Paul Gray 09/14/1987

Hungry Mind Review
"...[A] loving recreation, board by board, window mullion by window mullion, of a childhood house and the family life defined by, but not limited to, the four walls it enclosed...It is doubly powerful because the reader is given the house entire, by the time we reach the last page, and the reader knows, as he possesses the house, that the brother and sister protagonists of the novel are losing it, sill by sill, as we gain it. We experience possession and loss at once, and we mourn while we cheer." - Frederick Busch Summer 1996
