Carl Hiaasen
Carl Hiaasen graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism in 1974 and began writing for the Miami Herald in 1976. Since then he has earned a stellar reputation as an investigative reporter, uncovering political corruption, local conspiracies, and drug dealing in South Florida. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize numerous times for his probing column in the Herald, Hiaasen turned to writing mysteries with "Tourist Season", his debut novel published in 1986. He has continued to write a series of darkly comic novels set in his native Florida, including "Strip Tease", which was made into a film starring Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds. Hiaasen has also dabbled in songwriting, co-writing two songs on Warren Zevon's album "Mutineer".
"Part of what makes FLUSH so enjoyable si the sense it conveys that Hiassen himself is having such a grand old time...This is pitch-perfect writing, better than HOOT, and that's saying something because HOOT was a 2003 Newbery Honor Book."
"Hiaasen's...action-packed mystery set in the Florida Keys offers a colorful cast of dastardly villains and eccentric heroes, along with his signature environmental themes."
"Noah's determination and sense of right comes straight from the author's heart...."
From the Publisher
Annotation In this second humorous environmental treatise from Carl Hiaasen, author of the bestseller HOOT, Noah Underwood and his younger sister Abbey discover that though wealth and connections often overpower what is right, they can still make a difference. Dusty Muleman, the sleazy owner of a local gambling boat, the "Coral Queen," has been illegally dumping sewage into the marina, which has caused serious hazards and pollution on their local Florida Keys beaches. Paine, Noah's well-meaning, incredibly impulsive dad, determined to put a stop to it, sank the boat and landed himself in jail. With their father behind bars and their mother furious and distraught, Noah and Abbey decide to take on Dusty themselves. Along the way, the two meet a host of kooky characters, try to keep their parents from divorcing, and hatch an insane plan that just might save the day. A New York Times Notable Book of 2005.
Editors Note Bestselling novelist Carl Hiaasen is back with another hysterical mystery adventure for young readers, set in the Florida Keys. Noah's dad has a little problem with anger control. He tried to stop the Coral Queen casino boat's illegal dumping . . . by sinking the boat. But his bold protest fizzles: within days the casino is back in business, and Noah's dad is behind bars and out of action. Now Noah is determined to succeed where his father failed. But even though pumping raw sewage into the waters of the Florida Keys is both gross and against the law, turns out it's near impossible to catch the flusher—especially when he's already bamboozled the prosecutors, the local press, and even the Coast Guard. But Noah's got a few allies. There's his little sister, Abbey, an unreformed childhood biter; Lice Peeking, a half-soused ex-mate of the Coral Queen who is willing to testify . . . for a price; and Shelly, a bighearted bartender with even bigger biceps. Okay, so the odds aren't good. But Noah has an ace up his sleeve—a plan so crazy it just might stop the polluting, save the beaches, and prove to the world that it's the owner of the Coral Queen, and not his dad, who is full of . . . crud.
