With their father jailed for sinking a river boat, Noah Underwood and his younger sister, Abbey, must gather evidence that the owner of this casino is emptying his bilge tanks into the waters around their Florida Keys home. *Author: Hiaasen, Carl *Publication Date: 2010/05/11 *Number of Pages: 263 *Binding Type: Paperback *Grade Level: 4-6 *Language: English *Depth: 0.50 *Width: 6.00 *Height: 8.00
Annotation:
In this second humorous environmental treatise from Carl Hiaasen, author of the bestseller HOOT, Noah Underwood and his younger sister Abbey discover that though wealth and connections often overpower what is right, they can still make a difference. Dusty Muleman, the sleazy owner of a local gambling boat, the "Coral Queen," has been illegally dumping sewage into the marina, which has caused serious hazards and pollution on their local Florida Keys beaches. Paine, Noah's well-meaning, incredibly impulsive dad, determined to put a stop to it, sank the boat and landed himself in jail. With their father behind bars and their mother furious and distraught, Noah and Abbey decide to take on Dusty themselves. Along the way, the two meet a host of kooky characters, try to keep their parents from divorcing, and hatch an insane plan that just might save the day.
Author Bio
Carl Hiaasen
Carl Hiaasen graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism in 1974 and began writing for the Miami Herald in 1976. Since then he has earned a stellar reputation as an investigative reporter, uncovering political corruption, local conspiracies, and drug dealing in South Florida. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize numerous times for his probing column in the Herald, Hiaasen turned to writing mysteries with "Tourist Season", his debut novel published in 1986. He has continued to write a series of darkly comic novels set in his native Florida, including "Strip Tease", which was made into a film starring Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds. Hiaasen has also dabbled in songwriting, co-writing two songs on Warren Zevon's album "Mutineer".

Praise

Publishers Weekly
"Hiaasen's...action-packed mystery set in the Florida Keys offers a colorful cast of dastardly villains and eccentric heroes, along with his signature environmental themes." 07/27/2005

Kirkus Reviews
"Noah's determination and sense of right comes straight from the author's heart...." 08/01/2005

New York Times Book Review
"Part of what makes FLUSH so enjoyable si the sense it conveys that Hiassen himself is having such a grand old time...This is pitch-perfect writing, better than HOOT, and that's saying something because HOOT was a 2003 Newbery Honor Book." - Sam Swope 11/13/2005
