"...A wicked satire.  Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Editor's Note
A handful of young men set out to take on the decadent West but are more of a threat to themselves than anyone else in this black comedy from director Chris Morris. Omar (Riz Ahmed) is a devout Muslim living in the United Kingdom who has decided to form a terrorist cell to bring forth a jihad against a culture he believes is dominated by the sinful and ignorant. However, Omar isn't much of leader, and he's assembled an unimpressive team of fellow terrorists, among them Waj (Kayvan Novak), who lacks the brainpower to come up with ideas or direction on his own; Faisal (Adeel Akhtar), who is shy and doesn't have much to say; and Barry (Nigel Lindsay), a recent convert to Islam who tries to make up for his lack of practical knowledge with fierce passion. As Omar and his comrades debate both doctrine and methods, they ponder such notions as using birds as explosive devices, creating video communiqués with a hip-hop flavor, and attacking mosques in an effort to provoke nonviolent Muslims. But are Omar and his partners a legitimate threat to the safety of Great Britain, or just four half-bright twentysomethings with more bluster than imagination? FOUR LIONS received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Professional Reviews

Los Angeles Times
"It's a challenging and often hilarious study of a group of bickering, homegrown terrorists as they plan suicide bombings in London....The director and co-writer's extensive research and profound intellect elevate the film above mere farce." 11/05/2010

New York Times
"[A] shockingly hilarious, stiletto-sharp satire directed by Chris Morris and written by a squad of British wits." 11/05/2010

A.V. Club
"[A] wacky slapstick comedy that gleans big, cathartic laughs from the surreal juxtaposition of the mundane and the militantly spiritual....It's an edgy provocation that alchemizes tragedy into literally explosive comedy." -- Grade: B 11/04/2010

Movieline
"[Its] willingness to trek into some fairly dark corners is what gives FOUR LIONS its sting....[Morris] isn't afraid to tread too close to hot-button issues." 11/03/2010

Box Office
4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A]s pitch-black as it is hilarious....It should find a warm reception with fans of dark, outrageous humor." 11/10/2010

Chicago Sun-Times
3 stars out of 4 -- "It's an exceedingly dark comedy, a wicked satire, a thriller where the thrills center on the incompetence of the villains. It's fueled by both merriment and anger." 11/10/2010

Boxoffice Magazine 9 of 10
Chris Morris' entry into the Sundance Film Festival's World Dramatic competition is as pitch-black as it is hilarious. While the film is likely to find outright rejection among those who remain jittery with each turn in the War Against Terror, it should find a warm reception with fans of dark, outrageous humor...Terrorism is a fact of modern life. There isn't a lot we can do about it, so we may as well laugh about it. Four Lions makes it easy to laugh but not to dismiss either the tragedy of their actions or the wrong-headed intensity of their convictions. And heaven knows it's hard to resist a movie in which die-hard jihadists communicate through a children's social networking site. Puffin Party, indeed. - Pam Grady
