Review [Tora] It's rare for a feature film to attain the trifecta of entertaining, informing, and educating. Most motion pictures set against an historical backdrop inevitably bend the facts to fit their story. Unless the movie claims to be a documentary, this isn't necessarily a bad thing -- except when it is his stated goal to remain true to the historical record, a filmmaker need not feel constrained to adhere strictly to the established record. Some of cinema's greatest epics, including Gone with the Wind and Braveheart, play fast and loose with facts, and are perhaps the better for it. As long as movie-goers take care not to expect a history lesson from a film, deficiencies in historical accuracy should not be an issue.

Review [Patton] The film is nearly three hours long and George C. Scott is onscreen for most of that time, when we are not seeing battle scenes or Nazi planners (always speculating about Patton). It is one of those sublime performances in which the personalities of the actor and the character are fulfilled in one another..."Patton" is not a war film so much as the story of a personality who has found the right role to play. Scott's theatricality is electrifying. As Patton he always stands up in his Jeep, loves making speeches, grandstands, plunges into the action to personally goad his men, even directs traffic...Scott's performance is not one-level but portrays a many-layered man who desires to appear one-level.

Review [Longest] This black-and-white Cinemascope epic, one of the last great World War II films, is in the old style of the big war procedurals (the last of which was probably Richard Attenborough's 1977 A Bridge Too Far). It's a step-by-step dissection of the entire operation from all sides, beginning on the morning of the invasion and continuing into the next day, from war-room meetings with the President to crap games in the barracks and, of course, the battles. The focus is on the movers and shakers of the operation, the officers, though there are plenty of grunt's-eye-view vignettes, most of which are based on stories Cornelius Ryan - who wrote the blockbuster book on which the film is based - collected after the war...The cast is simply amazing, in numbers alone.
