Andrew Marcus wanted freckles. Nicky Lance had freckles. He had about a million of them. They covered his face, his ears and the back of his neck. Andrew didn't have any freckles. He had two warts on his finger. But they didn't do him any good at all. If he had freckles like Nicky, his mother would never know if his neck was dirty. So he wouldn't have to wash. And then he'd never be late for school. (from the first line)
Nicky has freckles -- they cover his face, his ears, and the whole back of his neck. Sitting behind him in class, Andrew once counted eighty-six of them, and that was just a start! If Andrew had freckles like Nicky, his mother would never know if his neck was dirty.
One day after school, Andrew works up enough courage to ask Nicky where he got his freckles. When know-it-all Sharon overhears, she offers Andrew her secret freckle juice recipe -- for fifty cents. It's a lot of money, but Andrew is desperate. At home he carefully mixes the strange combination of ingredients. Then the unexpected happens...

Author Bio
Judy Blume
Judy Blume is one of the most popular authors of children's books. Her writings have won a large number of awards, many of which were selected and voted on by children. Blume is known for her honest and frank dealings with subjects important to emerging adolescents such as teenage sexuality, including masturbation and menstruation. Her presentation of these topics has also made her one of the most frequently censored authors for young people. In 1981, her desire to give young people the right to information access led to the creation of the Kids Fund, which gives grants to non-profit organizations that serve young people. She was given the Carl Sandburg Freedom to Read Award in 1984 and the American Civil Liberties Union Award in 1986. She also received the 1995 Margaret A. Edwards Award for Outstanding Literature for Young Adults--special mention was made of her book FOREVER.
