Product Overview

Taking the best from La Vie En Rose and Amelie, renowned comic book artist Joann Sfar's Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life is a completely original take on one of Frances greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Jewish singer-songwriter, Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino). Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Sfar follows him from his precocious childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, to his beginnings as small time jazz musician and finally pop superstar. Along the way he romances many of the era's most beautiful women, including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon). Employing a witty surrealistic style and a soundtrack that includes many of the musician?s greatest hits, Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life is a quintessential time capsule to '60's Paris.

Editors Note
Note Director Joann Sfar's biopic SERGE GAINSBOURG, VIE HÉROÏQUE recounts the colorful life story of French chanteur and provocateur Serge Gainsbourg, known as much for his hugely outrageous antics in public as he was for his taboo-busting, often hilarious song lyrics and orchestrations. Eric Elmosino stars as the lead, while the late, tragic actress Lucy Gordon (SPIDER-MAN 3) co-stars as Gainsbourg's third wife, the actress-model Jane Birkin.
Hollywood Reporter "[T]he first half of the movie, in which we meet some of France's greatest postwar music hall stars such as Juliette Greco, Boris Vian and the Freres Jacques, is lively and interesting..." 02/01/2010 ,"Eric Elmosnino's impersonation of Gainsbourg in his drink-sodden progress from struggling painter to cabaret performer to aging proto-punk is a highly impressive piece of work." 02/01/2010
Sight and Sound "[I]ts combination of realist narrative and poetic animation makes it both a touching biopic and an inspired musical." 08/01/2010
Uncut "Eric Elmosnino excels in the lead role. Not only does he look like Serge, but he carries himself with the impassive majesty of a silent movie star..." 07/23/2010
Empire 3 stars out of 5 -- "Eric Elmosnino miraculously nails Gainsbourg's louche, lupine suavity and beguiling vulnerability..." 01/07/2010
Total Film 4 stars out of 5 -- "Eric Elmosnino is startlingly convincing in the title role.." 02/01/2011
Los Angeles Times "Unconventional, imaginative, nothing if not audacious....A portrait of creativity from the inside, a serious yet playful attempt to find an artistic way to tell an emotional truth." 09/02/2011
Entertainment Weekly "There's one good reason to see this biopic of the French pop-cabaret songster Serge Gainsbourg, and that's its lead actor, Erik Elmosnino." 09/09/2011

Review Unconventional, imaginative, nothing if not audacious, "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" is a portrait of creativity from the inside, a serious yet playful attempt to find an artistic way to tell an emotional truth. Though it's clearly on his side, "Gainsbourg" doesn't flinch when its subject goes deeper and deeper into alcoholism and bad behavior. Screenwriter Sfar's final word on his difficult, fascinating man is "I prefer his lies to his truth,' his dreams to his reality. It's not hard to see why.

Review The movie unreels his musical biography with an unending series of tastes of songs and performances. You may be surprised by how many you recognize. Why was Gainsbourg a hero? The film leaves the question hanging. I am afraid it was only because, like Sinatra, he did it his way. Which no one can deny.
