Frederick John Melville (1882-1940) was a British journalist, author, editor and renowned philatelist. He founded the Junior Philatelic Society in 1899 after being told he was too young (at age 17) to join the main society. He was president of the society for 40 years, until his death. He wrote over 100 books, the most well known of which was The ABC of Stamp Collecting (1903). It went through several editions and was translated into many other languages. His other works include: The Postage Stamps of Great Britain (1904), Penny all the Way: The Story of Penny Postage (1908), Abyssinia (1908), Gambia (1909), Chats on Postage Stamps (1911), All About Postage Stamps (1914), The Postage Stamp in War (1915), The Postage Stamps of the United States of America (1925), Modern Stamp Collecting (1940) Postage Stamps in the Making (with John Easton) (1949) and Teach Yourself Stamp Collecting (1961).
