Author Info
Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry has tremendous range as a writer. She is well known for her humorous series of books about Anastasia Krupnik and her younger brother, Sam, but has also written about more serious topics, such as the Holocaust. As a result of her father's career as a U.S. Army dentist, Lois was born in Hawaii and attended junior high school in Japan. She attended Brown University but left school to get married and have children and, as a matter of fact, she had four before her 25th birthday. She eventually returned to school and graduated from the University of Maine. Her first book, A SUMMER TO DIE, was published in 1977. She won the Newbery Medal in 1990 for NUMBER THE STARS and again in 1994 for THE GIVER. A woman of many talents, Lowry's work as a photographer has appeared on the cover of some of her books. She also appeared on the television quiz show Jeopardy!

From the Publisher
Annotation In a futuristic society that shuns the weak, a lame orphan named Kira is allowed to continue living only because she has an amazing talent for embroidery. Given the responsibility of restoring a historic robe that is worn during the village's annual Ruin Song Gathering (an event that retells the history of the society), Kira is taken to live with a group of other young artists, all also orphans, at the Council Edifice. While there she discovers a long-held secret about her society--and the fact that she has the power to change her entire world.
First Line "Mother?"There was no reply. She hadn't expected one. Her mother had been dead now for four days, and Kira could tell that the last of her spirit was drifting away.
Annotation 2 In a savage society that shuns the weak, a lame orphan named Kira is allowed to live only because she is an amazingly talented weaver. Given the responsibility of restoring the historic robe that is worn during the village's annual Ruin Song Gathering (an event that retells the history of their society), Kira is taken from her rundown hut and sent to live at the elegant Council Edifice. There she meets two other young artists, both of whom are also orphans and who, like her, have gifts more powerful than any of them fully understand. As Kira settles into her new role, she discovers a long-held secret about her society and begins to realize that she might have the power to change her entire world. This is a loose companion to the story begun in THE GIVER and continued in MESSENGER.
Editors Note Lame and suddenly orphaned, Kira is mysteriously removed from her squalid village to live in the palatial Council Edifice, where she is expected to use her gifts as a weaver to do the bidding of the all-powerful Guardians.
