Product Overview

"Get ready for two comedies starring John Travolta together for the first time in a DVD 2-Pack, GET SHORTY & it's sequel, BE COOL.

GET SHORTY: Chili Palmer (John Travolta) is a Miami loan shark who is sent to Los Angeles to collect on a gambling debt from film producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman). But Harry's luck may have changed; Chili is an avid movie fan--even of the B-movie screamers that Harry churns out. Instead of breaking Harry's legs, Chili pitches him an idea that could be the break of Harry's career. Chili soon discovers that loan sharking was the perfect training ground for making movies...though you have to be ruthless to make it in Hollywood.

BE COOL: Starring an unbelievably hip all-star cast, including John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Andre 3000, Steven Tyler and The Rock, and bursting with the hottest music in the biz, Be Cool is the wildly hilarious tale about a gangster turned music mogul...and what it takes to be number one with a bullet. When Chili Palmer (Travolta) decides to try his hand in the music industry, he romances the sultry widow (Thurman) of a recently whacked music exec, poaches a hot young singer (Christina Milian) from a rival label and discovers that the record industry is packin' a whole lot more than a tune!"

Review [Get] One of the pleasures of Get Shorty is watching the way the plot moves effortlessly from crime to the movies...Elmore Leonard's characters may exist in the crevices of society, but they are smart and verbal and don't take forever to get to the point...

Review [Be] Be Cool is a Pulp Fiction reunion movie. The cast features John Travolta (reprising the role he played in Get Shorty), Uma Thurman (as his new business partner/love interest), and Harvey Keitel (as a lowlife). There's even a dance scene featuring Travolta and Thurman. Unfortunately, that's where similarities between this film and Tarantino's iconic '90s film end. It's clear that director F. Gary Gray wants Be Cool to occupy Pulp Fiction's orbit, but it lacks the requisite energy. And, while some of the dialogue is clever, it doesn't crackle the way Tarantino's does. A Samuel L. Jackson-like monologue delivered by Cedric the Entertainer lacks sizzle. Travolta oozes attitude, but that kind of portrayal is double-edged sword. Chili is almost too cool to be real. In Get Shorty, he gained our sympathy. Here, there's nothing beneath the frosty surface. This isn't a character; it's an avatar. And there's never any sense of danger. Chili is so cool, we're certain he'll find a way out of even the stickiest situation. And, to be frank, none of the film's circumstances are all that sticky.

Review [Get] Get Shorty is exquisitely cast, with droll, well-nuanced performances from Hackman, DeVito and Russo. Each could easily be nominated for an Oscar...and deserve it. But make no mistake: It's Travolta--smooth, commanding, handsome as ever, a cool rhythmic bop in his walk--who owns the film.
