Years after leaving, Olivia Morrison comes home to Louisiana with her eight-year-old daughter to put things right with the Archer clan. But there is no welcome for her. Her stepcousin Seth, once her only comfort, is now distant--and engaged. The bayou echoes with memories of her mother's mysterious death, thought by most to be suicide by drowning. Olivia is determined to learn the truth and face a newly ignited passion for Seth.
From the Publisher:
Ten years after her elopement with a cowboy, Olivia Morrison returns to the Louisiana estate of her wealthy stepfather as a prodigal daughter, with an eight-year-old daughter in tow, uncertain of her reception, only to come face to face with her hostile family, her devastatingly attractive step-cousin Seth, and dark secrets concerning her mother's death. Reprint.Nine years after her elopement with a cowboy, Olivia Morrison returns to the Louisiana estate of her wealthy stepfather as a prodigal daughter, with an eight-year-old daughter in tow, uncertain of her reception.Nine years after leaving in disgrace, Olivia Morrison is coming home again with her eight-year-old, Sara, to put things right with the Archer clan. But there is no welcome for the prodigal daughter at the lavish Louisiana estate.

Her stepcousin, Seth, once her only comfort, is icy, dangerously attractive — and engaged. Her formidable stepgrandfather collapses with a heart attack at the sight of her, gasping her dead mother’s name: “Selena!”

The bayou echoes with memories of her mother’s mysterious death. Suicide by drowning, they said. But Olivia’s terrifying nightmares suggest another story. She is determined to learn the truth, and to face a newly ignited passion for Seth, who is too close for comfort, despite his vows.

When a new danger threatens her and her daughter, Olivia must find the courage to confront her old demons ... and uncover a shocking secret buried in the long-forgotten past....
Annotation:
Olivia "Livvy" Archer Morrison returns with her little girl to her childhood home on a northern Louisiana plantation only to be tortured by nightmares of her mother's violent death. As the intricacies of her mother's fate unfold, a subplot delves into the multiple murders committed 20 years ago by a serial killer who preys on young girls and then stuffs their mangled bodies like wild game. The mystery, of course, lies in how the two plots interconnect. In the meantime, love blossoms between Livvy and her stepcousin Seth Archer, a scion of the Archer clan who played the role of a bossy brother figure to Livvy when they were children. Only with his help will the terrors of the past leave Livvy and her young daughter unharmed.

Praise

Kirkus Reviews
"Robards does a decent job mixing elements of family, love, and mayhem. Not one of her most exciting efforts, but fans won't be disappointed." 12/01/1999
