Hoping to find his lost brother, Rownie escapes the home of the witch Graba and joins a troupe of goblins who perform in Zombay, a city where humans are forbidden to wear masks and act in plays.
From the Publisher:
Hoping to find his lost brother, Rownie escapes the home of the witch Graba and joins a troupe of goblins who perform in Zombay, a city where humans are forbidden to wear masks and act in plays.
Annotation:
Filled with magic, steampunk elements, references to fairy tales, and forbidden adventure, GOBLIN SECRETS is the story of a young orphan named Rownie searching for his missing older brother, Rowan. Bisected by a river, the city of Zombay has strict rules that prohibit anyone but goblins from providing entertainment. Living under the dubious care of a witch named Graba with mechanical chicken legs, Rownie misses Rowan, who illegally acted. When Rownie sees a play put on by goblins, he runs away with the troupe in order to search for his brother. However, he is no the only one looking for Rowan, making his search even more urgent. This is the first book in the middle grade Zombay series, and is the recipient of the 2012 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

Praise

"Alexander's world, blending steampunk and witchy magic, is impressively convincing and evocative in its oddities. Though highly textured, it's tightly woven and reassuringly seamless. The result is wryly humorous and bearably yet excitingly menacing: Even while much is left unexplained, Rownie's triumph is both gripping and tantalizing." 02/01/2012
