| Like fellow Iowan jazz drummer Bill Stewart, Wilson emerged out of the fertile (but little publicized) Midwest jazz scene to become an innovative composer/bandleader of national renown. Again like Stewart, he ultimately had to move to New York to do it, but the wide open spirit of the heartland can still be discerned on GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE. This never sounds like a "drummer's album," but rather the work of a mature composer with highly developed writing skills and a gift for both subtlety and lightheartedness. | |
| The slinky saxes of Joel Frahm and Andrew D'Angelo carry the yeoman's share of the melodic weight. Wilson's drums and percussion frame the tunes eloquently and often unconventionally. He frequently steps beyond the traditional jazz drumkit mindset for some idiosyncratic work reminiscent of Tom Waits drummer Michael Blair. GOING ONCE should appeal particularly to aficionados of New York's downtown/Knitting Factory progressive jazz school. | |
