On Tom Good's fortieth birthday, he decides to escape the rat race for a life of self-sufficiency with his wife, Barbara. Soon they're plowing a field in their suburban yard and tending to a goat and pigs, much to the dismay of their upwardly mobile neighbors and friends the Leadbetters. In this final season, the hilarity continues, especially when the Goods take a holiday, leaving the Leadbetters in charge! This series, known as The Good Life in the UK, was so popular the queen requested a viewing, and the Royal Command Performance is featured here, including footage of Her Royal Highness meeting the cast.Format: DVD MOVIE
Editor's Note
GOOD NEIGHBORS is a classic 1970s farcical Brit-com about an eccentric middle class couple who decide to leave behind the empty promises of the rat race and live off their the land--without leaving the suburbs! Much to the horror of their conservative neighbors the Leadbetters (Paul Eddington and Penelope Keith), Tom and Barbara Good (Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal) decide to turn their suburban home into a self-sufficient utopian garden, with hilarious results. This release contains the entire fourth series of the show, plus a show by the cast at the Royal Command Performance.

Professional Reviews

DVD Talk 8 of 10
I was intrigued by the premise of Good Neighbors, and I can't help but wonder how the characters were perceived in the late 1970s when the show was first aired, and how they might be perceived differently today. Personally, of the two sets of couples, I identify firmly with the Goods, who are trying to live a life out of the rat race, rather than the overly class-conscious Leadbetters. But will viewers today see the Goods as intrepid (if slightly oddball) pioneers of a worthwhile way of life, or as laughable members of the lunatic fringe? It's hard to say, though I'd hope for the former. - Holly E. Ordway

The Good Life's enormous popularity owes much to the easy chemistry between the four principle players. As the enthusiastic (if not always competent) Tom, Richard Briers was witty and charming, with a winning, childlike good humour, while Felicity Kendal's lively, sexy Barbara won her the adoration of millions of British men...Perhaps the show's greatest achievement was to win a loyal following among the very middle-class types it ridiculed week after week. - Mark Duguid
