In the final season of GOOD TIMES, one of the first African-American sitcoms, the Evans family grows and the laughs continue. "...the first show on American television that depicted an entire, loving black family.  The Film Judge

Editor's Note
The sixth and final season of this popular, ground-breaking series from the 1970s, which focused on a family living in the ghetto of South Chicago, neatly wraps up the twists and turns taken by the Evans family throughout the years. Matriarch Florida Evans (Esther Rolle) returns to the family when Thelma announces her engagement to Keith, J.J. works as a schoolteacher, and Willona continues to struggle to be a good mother to her adopted daughter, Penny (Janet Jackson).

Good Times was a sitcom, but, man, it could get pretty depressing. The theme song pokes us with how depressing living in poverty could be -- "Temporary layoffs/Good Times/Easy credit rip-offs/Good Times/ scratching and surviving/Good Times/ hanging in a chow line/Good Times/Ain't we lucky we got 'em?/Good Times!" But the full message of the song, and of the show, is that the family made do, and was grateful for the good stuff that they did have. They had each other, and they did their best...The brilliant part of Good Times, as with the other Lear sitcoms, is the tension between the situation and the comedy. - David Macdonald
