Author Bio
Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry has tremendous range as a writer. She is well known for her humorous series of books about Anastasia Krupnik and her younger brother, Sam, but has also written about more serious topics, such as the Holocaust. As a result of her father's career as a U.S. Army dentist, Lois was born in Hawaii and attended junior high school in Japan. She attended Brown University but left school to get married and have children and, as a matter of fact, she had four before her 25th birthday. She eventually returned to school and graduated from the University of Maine. Her first book, A SUMMER TO DIE, was published in 1977. She won the Newbery Medal in 1990 for NUMBER THE STARS and again in 1994 for THE GIVER. A woman of many talents, Lowry's work as a photographer has appeared on the cover of some of her books. She also appeared on the television quiz show Jeopardy!
