Editor's Note A thrill-a-minute adventure film. When brothers Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand (Josh Brolin) learn that greedy developers are forcing their family to move, they and their friends decide to have one last, precious adventure together. With the help of a treasure map they've found in the attic, the group, known as the Goonies, go in search of buried gold hoping against hope that if they find it, Mikey and Brand will succeed in keeping their home.

Examined objectively, from an adult's perspective, The Goonies is a pretty cheesy movie...But the beauty of this 1985 classic is that it isn't for - or about - adults. The Goonies is one of the best "kid" movies ever, appealing to the part of us that always believed adventure was waiting around the next corner...The core cast is a virtual Who's Who of '80s teen cinema. Led by asthmatic idealist Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin) and his no-nonsense older brother "Brand" (yep, 90210 fans, the original Brandon Walsh was a Goonie played by Streisand-stepson Josh Brolin)...It's a busy movie, to say the least. And it has producer Steven Spielberg's stamp all over it - Indiana Jones had nothing on these kids. There are booby traps to dodge, riddles to solve, villains to foil, gold to grab, kisses to steal, giant waterslides to shoot down, and pirate ships to explore. "The Goonies" is a smooth mixture of the usual ingredients from Steven Spielberg action movies, made special because of the high-energy performances of the kids who have the adventures. It's a fantastical story of buried pirate treasure, told with a slice-of-life approach that lets these kids use words Bogart didn't know in "Casablanca"..."Goonies", like "Gremlins", walks a thin line between the cheerful and the gruesome, and the very scenes the adults might object to are the ones the kids will like the best...During "Goonies", I was often exhilarated by what was happening. Afterward, I was less enthusiastic...It uses what it knows about kids to churn them up, while "E.T." gave them things to think about, the values to enjoy. "The Goonies", like "Gremlins", shows that Spielberg and his directors are absolute masters of how to excite and involve an audience. - Roger Ebert
