Author Info
Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry has tremendous range as a writer. She is well known for her humorous series of books about Anastasia Krupnik and her younger brother, Sam, but has also written about more serious topics, such as the Holocaust. As a result of her father's career as a U.S. Army dentist, Lois was born in Hawaii and attended junior high school in Japan. She attended Brown University but left school to get married and have children and, as a matter of fact, she had four before her 25th birthday. She eventually returned to school and graduated from the University of Maine. Her first book, A SUMMER TO DIE, was published in 1977. She won the Newbery Medal in 1990 for NUMBER THE STARS and again in 1994 for THE GIVER. A woman of many talents, Lowry's work as a photographer has appeared on the cover of some of her books. She also appeared on the television quiz show Jeopardy!
Praise
"The prose is light as gossamer; the story as haunting as a dream." (starred review)
"[A] spellbinding story....Lyrical, richly descriptive prose ushers readers into a fascinating parallel world inhabited by appealingly quirky characters." (starred review)
"Lowry's gifts as a writer--her precise and evocative prose, her vivid characters, her ability to ratchet up suspense--are displayed at full strength in this enormously entertaining and finally very moving novel."
From the Publisher
Annotation This poignant middle-grade fantasy by the author of THE GIVER concerns the power of dreams. The tiny, gentle dream-givers visit an assigned home at night, gathering memories from the owner's possessions through touch, weaving them into a dream, and bestowing that dream on the human who lives there. Littlest One, a young and ever-curious dream-giver, learns her trade from Thin Elderly, in the house of a retired teacher who has recently taken in John, a troubled eight-year-old foster child. Unfortunately, John is also the prey of the Sinisteeds, dream-givers gone wrong who inflict nightmares instead of bestowing pleasant dreams.
First Line An owl called, its shuddering hoots repeating mournfully in the distance.
