Product Overview

Grandpa Green wasn''t always a gardener. He was a farmboy, a kid with chickenpox, a soldier, and an artist. In this captivating new picture book, readers follow Grandpa Green''s great-grandson into a garden he created, a fantastic world where memories are handed down in the fanciful shapes of topiary trees.

Author Info
Lane Smith
Lane Smith is the illustrator of such stunning works as THE TRUE STORY OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS, THE STINKY CHEESE MAN AND OTHER FAIRLY STUPID TALES, and the "Time Warp Trio" series, all of which were written by Jon Scieszka. He is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design. In addition to his work as an illustrator for the works of other authors, he has also written and illustrated a number of books of his own, including THE HAPPY HOCKY FAMILY and THE BIG PETS. In 1993, THE STINKY CHEESE MAN AND OTHER FAIRLY STUPID TALES was named a Caldecott Honor Book.
"Many of the illustrations morph with page turns: Tears from the baby become water from a hose; a mysterious conical shape becomes a cannon; a bunny near a tiny tree munches a carrot topiary...Though this book has lots of adult appeal, it will also be a wonderful bridge to exploring family history with the very young."
From the Publisher
Annotation A little boy works his way through a giant green garden filled with whimsical topiary that tells the story of his great-grandfather's life. From his birth a very long time ago, the story goes on to share the great-grandfather's childhood chicken pox, the delights of the farm he grew up on, a harsh wartime, and his glorious wedding day, among other milestones. In tones of lush green, with beautifully shaped topiary imaginatively telling the tale, this is a tender picture book about the connection between the generations.
