Product Overview

Nominated as one of the top 5 films in Europe for 2006 and winner of numerous other festival awards, Grbavica: The Land of My Dreams is a touching film about a single mother (Esma) who lives with her young daughter (Sara), in the Grbavica district of Sarajevo, a neighborhood once used as an internment camp during the Yugoslav wars. When Sara wants to go on a school tip, questions arise about her father, who is supposed to have died as a war martyr. What secret is Esma hiding? The truth, threatening to tear them apart, will eventually bring them back together in what becomes a beautiful and tender story that you won't soon forget.

Review "Grbavica: The Land of My Dreams" is written and directed by Jasmila Zbanic in a stripped-down style that carries cumulative force. It appears to have been made from the inside, not only of the characters but of the historical situation in which they struggle...Karanovic, best remembered from Emir Kusturica's "When Father Was Away on Business," is a remarkably expressive actress. When Esma suits up in her cocktail dress, the squalor of her life comes crashing down on her and yet she soldiers through. We don't need to find out what happened to her in the war - although eventually we do. Her eyes tell us everything...Against all odds she tries to do right by everybody, including herself. She has no illusions, not even about the bodyguard (Leon Lucev) who fancies her and who has his own horrors to sort out. Ultimately Esma is not a martyr but a heroine.

Review Snipers targeting women and children on the streets who are just trying to procure enough water and food to merely survive. Sounds like Darfur or the Middle East, right? Well, in this case, no. In this case it was the former Yugoslavia, circa the 1990s...Sadly, most of the world has simply forgotten about the decade-long war, but the residents of this region--those lucky enough to have survived--have been scarred for life. And for those too young to remember the war, or might not have even been born yet, the aftermath of the conflict is never too far from mind...This is wholly evident in young director Jasmila Zbanic's moving film Grbavica: The Land of My Dreams...There is a bleakness to this story, and a true sadness in regard to the state of affairs in modern Sarajevo. But the film does leave the viewer with a sense of hope for everyone still so affected by the war. It is also a wonderful mother-daughter story that holds true to the timeless sentiment that the bond between mother and child can never be broken...
