| THE GREAT ANNIHILATOR is often hailed by critics and audiences alike as Swans' most palatable and accessible album. On this release, multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira foregoes his more experimental and industrial tendencies in favor of easily digestible soundscapes and tracks that are, at times, downright catchy. Songs such as "Mind/Body/Light/Sound" even tread into dance territory. "My Buried Child" and "Warm" showcase the breathy female vocals of Gira's partner and collaborator, Jarboe, who nicely complements his deeply brooding, almost demonic drawl. Also of note here is Gira's assemblage of a strong crew of instrumentalists--including frequent collaborator Norman Westberg on guitar, Algis Kizys on bass, Clinton Steele on guitar, and Ted Parsons on drums. | |

Rolling Stone (10/5/95, p.69)
- 3 Stars - Good - "...The music has opened up a great deal. Acoustic guitar and nearly New Age electronic pastels are as likely to be part of the mix as the band's signature metallic harshness..."

Alternative Press (5/95, pp.80-82)
- "...Swans are a call to glorious nullification that resounds in attempts to escape corporal existence and despair. It's a space that is either foreboding, all too real, or soothing...but no matter how you get there, THE GREAT ANNIHILATOR is intense, exhilarating, and believe it--very beautiful..."
