The Fool On The Hill

by Robert Andres on 12/12/2001

This is not a live version of your parents favorite book. In fact, it's a whole new take on the animated Christmas classic. Gone is the creepy, creeping narration and the overall evil nature of the Grinch himself. In an attempt to explain his character, the writers of this movie have actually given justification to the Grinch's actions and made him worthy of our sympathy. Outside of his taste for glass, the Grinch seemed like a perfectly normal green kid. He dressed like everyone else, he enjoyed the arts, and he nutured a crush on a girl in his class. Unfortunately he became a victim of hate at a very early age. No foreigner should have to experience that in grade school. High school maybe, but not first grade. At first I found it a bit disturbing that the writers would choose to build a childrens movie around such blatant prejudice of a another species. But I guess they had to start somewhere. Besides, my neices and nephews really enjoy the movie, the songs, and the cute costumes and scenery. I'll always let them watch my copy, at least until they start picking up on how to single out people who are different.

Editors Note
Note Director Ron Howard casts comedian Jim Carrey in the title role in this live-action adaptation of the famous Christmas tale by Dr. Seuss, giving this rendition of HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS a delightfully manic spin. Carrey is virtually unrecognizable in his elaborate green makeup, but his anarchic comic touch is unmistakable. He manages to fully embody the grumpy title character, while still supplying his own comedic touches, and it is his performance that makes the film a treat for adults and children alike. The candy-colored set design for the town of Whoville and the jubilant score contribute to the overall feeling of innocuous fantasy that the Grinch disrupts with his dastardly deeds. The familiar story of the Grinch stealing every present in town on Christmas Eve has been expanded to incorporate flashbacks to the Grinch's childhood, which serve to explain his hostility toward the Whos. As Cindy Lou-Who, a little girl so sweet she sees goodness even in the Grinch, young Taylor Momsen strikes just the right note of adorable ingenuousness. Howard gets the performance the film needs from her, as her character makes the Grinch's eventual change of heart both believable and touching.
New York Times "...Mr. Carrey's ability to pentrate his character's disguise and get away with his usual mugging and clowning is technically no small accomplishment..." 11/17/2000 p.E20
Variety "...Fantastic....A hugely imaginative technical achievement....Carrey wears the costume well..." 01/01/2000 p.88
Box Office "...HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS still has heart....[Carrey gives] a maniacal performance..." 01/01/2001 p.66
Hollywood Reporter "...Thanks to makeup whiz Rick Baker's surprisingly flexible latex work, Carrey's patented rubbery expressions are allowed to come through unimpeded..." 11/17/2000 p.8

Review ...Director Ron Howard has certainly nailed the playfully eccentric other world of Whoville, and created a fair number of wild set-pieces that rely on the weird comic energy of Carrey, whose manic, darting movements are perfect for the Grinch, a restless, driven maverick.

Review ...a delicate balancing act between four powerful forces that could have clashed but ended up in harmony: Ron Howard's balanced direction, a cheerful and inviting look guided by production designer Michael Corenblith and visual effects supervisor Kevin Mack, Jeffrey Price & Peter S. Seaman's clever script ideas and, the sine qua non, Jim Carrey as the Grinch.
