Author Info
James Van Praagh
The son of a carpenter, James Van Praagh was raised in Queens, New York. A Roman Catholic, he spent a year in seminary, and then attended San Francisco State University, where he earned a degree in broadcasting and communications. Van Praagh moved to Los Angeles, which is where he first encountered a medium and where he started giving psychic readings. Van Praagh states that he is a medium as well as a psychic, meaning he can cross over from life to death. He first came to the public eye through appearances on talk shows hosted by Joan Rivers and Larry King. His first book, TALKING TO HEAVEN, reached number one position on the New York Times best seller list in 1998, and it remained there for three months. It was the basis for the television minisereis LIVING WITH THE DEAD. Van Praagh's unique approach to mediumship involves grief counseling and forgiveness. He has hosted a highly successful daytime show BEYOND WITH JAMES VAN PRAAGH. He has also been on the receiving end of skepticism, on ABC's 20/20 and on CBS's Unsolved Mysteries, as well as from professional debunker James Randi, and others. Through a prodigious outpouring of books, tapes, public appearances, and an official website, James Van Praagh has become a dominant figure in the Body, Mind, & Spirit market.
