Tedious and boring
I was actually looking forward to seeing this movie, because I like Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner, and how can you go wrong with an action movie about ocean rescue? But you can go so, so wrong, and the mistake is called "The Guardian." Kutcher and Costner are both decent actors with great inherent likability. But in this movie, they both phone in their performances - the result of poor direction. The pacing in this movie is awful, the acting atrocious, the plot nothing you haven't seen before in dozens of better movies. There is some "Officer and a Gentleman," and love fails to lift us up where we belong. Kutcher is driven and has a Big Secret, but is too macho to let on what it is. There is the obligatory training footage, which lasts way too long. Some other stuff happens, which was boring enough I can't remember what it was. Then Kutcher has a big reveal of his Big Secret, and I literally laughed out loud - not because of his performance (which is not too great even in his big scene) but because of the truly inept prop that the movie puts in front of us to help with the Exposition of the Big Secret. Slow, boring and tedious - not what you expect from an action movie about arctic rescue swimmers. That cable show about people crab fishing in Alaska is more interesting and compelling than this. Avoid.
