From the lost journals of archaeologist Amelia Peabody comes a chronicle from the "missing years"--a tale of adventure, bravery, and terror.

Readers have long wondered what befell the Emerson clan during the years before the Great War. Now, at last, the silence is broken and the truth revealed of a perilous journey to a secret and mysterious place hidden deep in the heart of the unforgiving desert. An adventure prompted by loyalty to an endangered friend--and spurred on by lies and treachery--leads Amelia Peabody and her intrepid family into a nest of vipers lying in wait at a remote mountain fortress. And when a dark past and a shocking mystery are ultimately discovered, a loved one may be lost forever.

Annotation:
This 16th book in the Amelia Peabody series returns to people and places last seen in THE LAST CAMEL DIED AT NOON and occurs during 1907 and 1908, a period of time not previously covered by author Elizabeth Peters. A young man arrives at the Emersons' home in England and says he is the brother of their friend Tarek, prince of the secret desert fortress known as the Lost Oasis. Tarek apparently desperately needs the Emersons' help, and so off the family goes, heading into a situation fraught with both known and unknown perils.

Praise

Publishers Weekly
"[W]ill have particular appeal for fans....Peters's knowledge of ancient Egypt and the excavations and desecrations that accompanied early archaeological attempts in the region allow her to dress her melodrama with authentic trappings that add greatly to the enjoyment." 03/01/2004

New York Times Book Review
"[This book] revitalizes Amelia." 04/25/04
