Professional Reviews 7 of 10
[Cannonball] The narrative is an utter mess and makes no sense, but the film is loaded to the gills with precious bit players--how can you not laugh at Dub Taylor, or Don Knotts, or the orangutan, particularly when it kisses Don Knotts?--and at its best, the film brings to mind the classic comedies of Hope & Crosby or Abbott & Costello. It is joyfully irreverent, with lots of fast cars, oodles of gags, and more stars than there are in a box of Lucky Charms. Burt Reynolds stars, with Dean Martin, Jackie Chan and Dom Deluise, to name just a few. - Doug Pratt

The Onion A.V. Club 7 of 10
[Gumball] A few strains of the "keep moving or die" ethos of the era's landmark post-hippie drive-in fodder survive in The Gumball Rally, a seminal 1976 cross-country race movie from stuntman-turned-director Charles Bail. By and large, Bail reverts to the forced eccentricity and madcap cast of '60s comedies like It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which The Gumball Rally apes with its light jazz-pop score and high-concept story of playboys, mobsters, housewives, and grease monkeys competing for honor and money in an illegal race. - Noel Murray

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
[Gumball] The most obvious difference between two current movies, The Gumball Rally and Cannonball Run is that the first is about an illegal road race from New York to California, and the second is about an illegal road race from California to New is a pleasant, slick, inoffensive entertainment. It contains some difficult and well-coordinated stunt driving. It has a fairly good cast. And it never makes you want to flee the theater. - Roger Ebert

Qwipster's Movie Reviews 6 of 10
[Cannonball] Instead of the race, the film is merely an excuse for nonstop cameo appearances, cars crashing through buildings or fistfights in every other scene, and the silliest ideas for cheap laughs you'll ever see in a film. Unless you absolutely think an orangutan slapping people and giving everyone the middle finger is hilarious, or want to see Marilu Henner getting it on with Dom DeLuise, it's far more entertaining watching the second hand of your watch go around 108 times. - Vince Leo
