Thousands of people live in giant orbiting space colonies called "Sides." However, the Earth Government, which rules the colonies, is unjust and cruel. A group of revolutionaries build five robotic Gundams and plan to send them to Earth to begin their fight for independence. Piloted by five young men, their hopes and dreams and the freedom of the colonists lie within them as they descend to Earth to begin Operation Meteor!
Editor's Note
This incredibly popular extension of the venerable GUNDAM series has spawned a rabid following all over the globe. The series begins as the space colonies have grown tired of the oppressive rule by the Earth government, a corrupt organization ruled by people who have no real interest in the colonists or their well-being. Their rule is unjust and unfair, but not unopposed. Resistance forces in the colonies have created five special Mobile Suits (robot-like vehicles) called Gundams. Five young pilots have been selected to sneak these Gundams down to Earth and begin a guerilla campaign that will end the Earth government's rule forever. Of course, there is also romance, albeit a rather strange one. A young woman, Relena, sees the face of one of the Gundam pilots, which is enough for him to threaten her life. However, a relationship forms between the two that causes problems for both.

Anime Jump 7 of 10
My biggest problem with Gundam Wing is that I just can't get into the idea of homicidal young teenagers piloting these robots with such implausible efficiency. In the original Gundam, Amuro Ray only survived because of what basically amounts to low-level ESP. Later in the series, he becomes not just a pilot with exceptional reflexes and perception, but also a combat-hardened veteran. It's the experience that ends up making him formidable, and not just his Newtype skills. I dunno, maybe it's also because the Gundam Wing pilots' mechs are stupidly overpowered, but the battles just seem to lack a certain excitement. - Mike Toole
