Author Info
Edward Eager
A well-known Broadway playwright and lyricist, Edward Eager first began creating stories for children in order to entertain his young son. Eager is best known for his series about four time-traveling cousins, which began with the 1951 publication of "Half Magic". He admitted being strongly influenced by the work of British author E. Nesbit, and constantly promoted her books, saying "...any child who likes my books and doesn't know hers [should read her work so that he or she] may be led back to the master of us all."
From the Publisher
Annotation Siblings Jane, Mark, Katherine, and Martha are enduring a dull summer under the watchful eye of their dislikable babysitter Miss Bick. Everything changes however, when Jane happens upon a magical coin--one that has the ability to grant exactly half of whatever the wisher requests. It takes the siblings a few tries to understand how to harness this strange type of magic, but once they do, they have a series of amazing adventures, including an accidental trip to the desert and a meeting with Sir Lancelot. Heavily inspired by the works of E. Nesbit (author of such books as THE MAGIC CITY, and THE RAILWAY CHILDREN), author Edward Eager includes a tribute to her in HALF MAGIC, as he does in all of his works for children. Occasional B&W illustrations accompany the text.
