It began one day in summer about thirty years ago, and it happened to four children. (from the first line)
The other knights fell on their knees, kissing the children's hands and hailing them as their deliverers. Sir Launcelot also thanked the children quite politely, but somehow he didn't seem so happy to be free as the children had expected he would.
A moment later, when the other captive knights had left to resume their interrupted quests, the children found out why.
"You save me by magical means?" Sir Launcelot asked.
"That's right," said Katherine, proudly. "I did it with my little charm."
"That mislikes me very much," said Sir Launcelot. "I would it were otherwise."
Four children spending their summer in a city apartment enjoy a series of fantastic adventures by double-wishing on an ancient coin, in a re-release of a classic tale that includes new cover art by Quentin Blake. From the Publisher:
Since "Half Magic" first hit bookshelves in 1954, Edward Eager's tales of magic have become beloved classics. Now four cherished stories about vacationing cousins who stumble into magical doings and whimsical adventures are available in updated paperback formats. Illustrations.
Mark, Katherine, Jane, and Martha have a series of fantastic adventures by double-wishing on an ancient magic. B&w illustrations accompany the text.Siblings Jane, Mark, Katherine, and Martha are enduring a dull summer under the watchful eye of their dislikable babysitter Miss Bick. Everything changes however, when Jane happens upon a magical coin--one that has the ability to grant exactly half of whatever the wisher requests. It takes the siblings a few tries to understand how to harness this strange type of magic, but once they do, they have a series of amazing adventures, including an accidental trip to the desert and a meeting with Sir Lancelot. Heavily inspired by the works of E. Nesbit (author of such books as THE MAGIC CITY, and THE RAILWAY CHILDREN), author Edward Eager includes a tribute to her in HALF MAGIC, as he does in all of his works for children. Occasional B&W illustrations accompany the text.
Author Bio
Edward Eager
A well-known Broadway playwright and lyricist, Edward Eager first began creating stories for children in order to entertain his young son. Eager is best known for his series about four time-traveling cousins, which began with the 1951 publication of "Half Magic". He admitted being strongly influenced by the work of British author E. Nesbit, and constantly promoted her books, saying "...any child who likes my books and doesn't know hers [should read her work so that he or she] may be led back to the master of us all."
