Gail Gibbons earned a B.F.A. at the University of Illinois and began her career as a commercial artist. She was inspired to become an illustrator of children's books by a college professor. Her first book for children., WILLY AND HIS WHEEL WAGON, was published in 1975. Many of her books, such as CLOCKS (1979) and LOCKS AND KEYS (1980) are concept books that explain the way things work.
