From the Publisher:
As the child in this story watches her parents build, sew, garden, and paint, she realizes she wants to create as well, and with a place to work, good materials, and plenty of encouragement, she makes her own beautiful things. By the author of Pie in the Sky.
Annotation:
A young narrator talks about the many things her parents make by hand, like wooden birdhouses and colorful quilts out of patches of fabric. She also tells of how her parents have encouraged her own artistic nature by giving her a place of her own in which to work and create, and how she and her parents all use their hands and work together when they tend to their garden. Color illustrations accompany this lift-the-flap board book, which itself is shaped like a hand.
Author Bio
Lois Ehlert
Lois Ehlert was encouraged to explore her creativity by her parents and eventually attended the Layton School of Art and the University of Wisconsin. Ehlert started illustrating books for children early in her career but, unhappy with their final production quality, she stopped and focused on graphic design work. Ehlert returned to the world of children's book illustration only after she felt that publishers had begun to pay more attention to design and production. Her book COLOR ZOO was named a Caldecott Honor Book in 1990.

Praise

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"This is a richly layered narrative with literally layered illustrations that simply and succinctly link the child to the parents and to the future. The glossy pages and saturated colors are warm and appealing, and the encouraging paper-engineering element gently leads the reader along to the satisfying conclusion." - Janice M. Del Negro January 1998
