Frank Asch
Author and illustrator Frank Asch is best known for his series of picture books about the character Bear such as HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOON, BEAR SHADOW, and GOODBYE HOUSE. In addition to these picture books, Asch also writes nonfiction, poetry, concept books, and novels for children. Asch was initially inspired to become an artist when one of his elementary school teachers gave him his very first "one man show" in the school's art room. By the time he was a high school student, Asch was writing stories to accompany his artwork. Asch's first children's book, GEORGE'S STORE, was published in 1968--the year before he graduated from Cooper Union where he earned a B.F.A.
Praise
"A deceptively complex and witty story is told with utmost simplicity in softly glowing moonlit colors."
"It is a pleasure to find such a satisfying book for a very young child."

Annotation 2 Thinking about birthdays because his own is coming up, Bear decides to buy the moon a birthday present. When Bear talks to the moon, he unknowingly hears the echo of his own voice and thus comes to believe that not only do he and the moon share the same birthday, but they would also both like the same gift--a hat. Bear then uses all his savings to buy the moon a lovely top hat. But how can he give it to the moon? Bear's inventive way of presenting his gift eventually leads to a wonderful surprise for Bear as well. This look at the joys of giving and receiving gifts is illustrated with color paintings.
