Deathly Hallows is not for children

on 9/5/2011

I've seen all the Harry Potter movies so far. The three main characters have grown and matured with the actors who portray them (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson). The themes are more serious, darker in nature, and more intense. There are relationship issues, and matters of good versus evil resulting in death, revenge, and more death. The opening scene of this movie shows a woman being tortured to death by wizards. The themes are not suitable for children. Only older teens and adults should consider watching this movie. (I haven't read the books, so I don't know how graphic they are.) This movie is part 1 of 2 that span the seventh and final book, of the same title. I won’t spoil it by giving away the plot. But there are the familiar themes of the quest, the test of loyalty, and finding one’s inner strength and resolve to face one’s fears and overcome one’s foes. The writing, direction, and acting are all impressive. And you have all the action, suspense, and special effects you would expect from a big-budget movie based on J.K. Rowling’s phenomenal book series. But the stories have become progressively dark and the subject matter often disturbing. Bear that in mind before you watch it, or if you are deciding whether to let children watch it.

Editors Note
Note Instead of distilling J.K. Rowling's behemoth bestseller into a single film, director David Yates and his cast and crew have divided the final book in the Harry Potter series into a pair of movies. In this first installment in the two-part epic, Harry's final adventure begins. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART I marks the third Potter film for Yates, who also helmed HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX and HARRY POTTER AND THE HALFBLOOD PRINCE.
Wall Street Journal "Rupert Grint has grown up to be a skillful actor who knows the value of a slow burn..." 11/18/2010
Box Office 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "There is suspense and action in this film, but there is also lots of room for emotion..." 11/16/2010
Los Angeles Times "One of the pleasures of the HARRY POTTER series is watching these three actors grow up from film to film along with the characters. That experience gives the trio of performers a real-world camaraderie to call on..." 11/18/2010
Chicago Sun-Times 3 stars out of 4 -- "[A] handsome and sometimes harrowing film..." 11/16/2010
Rolling Stone "Radcliffe and Watson share a sweet dance. And Grint, funny and touching, steals the show as jealous Ron." 11/18/2010
Entertainment Weekly "[T]he most cinematically rewarding chapter yet....[PART 1] bravely faces the future, slipping with expert ease among the thrilling mass of complications that Rowling throws fans in the final sprint, then guiding the faithful to the fate that awaits everyone in this world, the moment called The End." -- Grade: A- 11/23/2010
New York Times "[The movie] belongs solidly to Mr. Radcliffe, Mr. Grint and Ms. Watson, who have grown into nimble actors, capable of nuances of feeling that would do their elders proud." 11/19/2010
USA Today 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The film continues POTTER's reputation as a visual feast, especially when Voldemort calls his minions (and snake) to the table." 11/18/2010
Hollywood Reporter "[T]his film feels devoted above all to reproducing the novel onscreen as closely as possible....The film's most engaging sustained interlude involves the kids' risky visit to the Ministry of Magic..." 11/11/2010
Washington Post 3 stars out of 4 -- "[F]ull of the enchantment, emotion and incident for which the Potter series has become so fanatically cherished." 11/18/2010
Empire 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he action sequences are orchestrated by director David Yates with brio and inventive effects....[The] tension's pumped up sky-high." 11/19/2010
Premiere 3 stars out of 4 -- "HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS -- PART 1 is easily the best movie in the series, if only because it's the one movie with the most narrative thrust."
Total Film 3 stars out of 5 -- "Watson, as ever, is the star -- breezy and effortless and never over-rehearsed. 01/01/2011
Sight and Sound "Liberated from Hogwarts, the film also travels to the awesome limestone pavement of Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales. There is magic in such locations..." 02/01/2011

Review Harry, Ron and Hermione abandon the safety of Hogwarts in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," and so does this dark and despairing penultimate adaptation of J.K. Rowling's epic fantasy cycle. As the three teenage wizards enter the wilderness to do battle with Lord Voldemort, director David Yates spins the series' most expansive, structurally free-form chapter yet -- lumbering and gripping by turns, and suffused with a profound sense of solitude and loss.

Review "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" is a brisk, bracing film of actors in close-up. The lead players have grown into the roles and of the Who's Who of British character actors in supporting parts shine like never before, placed, as they are, in both real-world London and a selection of desolate landscapes that match the gloom of this apocalyptic tale...Alternately funny and touching, it's the best film in the series, an "Empire Strikes Back" for these wizards and their wizarding world. And those effects? They're so special you don't notice them. The digital elves are the most lifelike the movies have ever seen...The first third is brisk and witty, the middle third gloomy and the finale of "Part 1? not so much a cliffhanger as a grim, inspiring tease, a masterly build-up to put "I can't wait for part 2" on every Muggles' lips.

Claire Martin, Denver Post By any measure, Deathly Hallows is a ripping thriller.
Scott Bowles, USA Today Menacing and meditative, Hallows is arguably the best installment of the planned eight-film franchise...
