Product Overview

From the creator of Training Day comes Harsh Times, a gritty look at friendship, loyalty and ambition set on the extremely rough streets of South Central Los Angeles.

Jim Davis (Christian Bale) is an ex-Army Ranger recently discharged from the military, yet still haunted by nightmares of his former occupation. While seeking a position with the LAPD that will allow him to marry his Mexican girlfriend and bring her to the United States, Jim kills time chilling with his best friend, Mike (Freddy Rodriguez).

Mike is feeling the heat from his longtime girlfriend, Sylvia (Eva Longoria): either get a job or get out. But the love of a beautiful woman can't compare to the bonds of friendship, and Jim and Mike are soon cruising the streets of South Central, slipping back into a deceitful life of drugs, violence and petty crime, just like when they were kids.

Review First and foremost, Harsh Times is a character study of a man whose psychotic dark side is rising up to dominate his personality. However, it's also a look at how war, because of its need to legitimatize killing and turn people into weapons, can result in the dissolution of humanity. When we consider casualty reports from battles, the numbers reflect death and physical injury. One thing that is never listed is the psychological toll. Few individuals who go off to war and experience its devastation and chaos return as the same person. This factor lies at the heart of what Harsh Times illustrates...Harsh Times occasionally echoes Taxi Driver, Ayer's own Training Day, and even First Blood in the way it examines the psychological disintegration of a character and the seduction of amorality.

Review A psychotic seizure of a performance by Christian Bale dominates "Harsh Times," the directorial debut of David Ayer that channels "Taxi Driver" while also feeling like a dry run for Ayer's subsequently written "Training Day." Bale's showy turn as a 'round-the-bend Gulf War vet and the pic's sensationalistic treatment of modern ills will likely induce a distrib and some viewers to bite. But the relish with which the film pursues its deterministic negativity will turn off most audiences...It's a potent dramatic set-up, especially with a commanding actor like Denzel Washington or Bale playing the hard-ass. A lot of the stuff Jim pulls possesses a voyeuristic amusement quotient in direct proportion to its outrageousness...Most of the supporting cast seems juiced by their physically upfront roles, and Ayer's dialogue often crackles.
