Harvard historian Peter Fallon teams up with a other characters from Back Bay to investigate a university legend about a priceless original Shakespeare manuscript that may have survived the Harvard Hall fire of 1764. Reprint.Peter Fallon, the hero of William Martin's bestselling novel Back Bay, has found evidence that a priceless treasure-an undiscovered Shakespeare play-is hidden somewhere in the venerable halls of Harvard University. An antiquarian who knows many of the school's carefully guarded secrets, Fallon understands the powerful implications of the discovery. But as he delves into the school's past-from witch hangings to the fires of the Civil War to the riotous 1960s-he learns that men and women have risked death, disgrace, and banishment in pursuit of this invaluable relic. And, as he uncovers rifts between generations, families, friends, and lovers, Fallon begins to understand something else: that finding this landmark manuscript is a matter of life and death.Harvard historian Peter Fallon teams up with a other characters from Back Bay to investigate a university legend about a priceless original Shakespeare manuscript that may have survived the Harvard Hall fire of 1764. Reprint.
Annotation:
Harvard, in its beginnings, was known for providing an education to any worthy student who desired one. A copy of the lost play by Shakespeare (LOVE'S LABORS WON) belonging to John Harvard becomes part of the library at the university he founds, but one of those scholarship students, a Puritan named Isaac Wedge who disapproves of anything theatrical, steals it and hides it away. As the generations pass, the now-prosperous Wedge family sends most of its sons off to Harvard, and the manuscript stays in the family. Then an old Harvardian named Peter Fallon, a book collector, attempts to track it down with the help of an old girlfriend--but a gangland figure is after the same quarry....
