|It seems as though every game I play these days is a sequel or a reboot or a reinterpretation or a reimagining, etc., of an older game. That is again true in the case of Atari's Haunted House. Although the game it is based on is older than most and something that has been off of people's radars for decades, it is not a newly created franchise. The original Atari title of that name was released for the Atari 2600 in February of 1982. As with many games back then, the idea was pretty simple – go through a location looking for something. This is a nice remake that's aimed mainly at pre-teens. It doesn't have gore or violence outside of animated violence and makes it a nice game for the price.
Fun for tweens...1/6/2011
I consider myself to be somewhat of an adult-child. I ordered this game for myself and I think it took me all of maybe three or four hours to beat the game. It was pretty fun but I feel like it was designed with the pre-teen to early teen age group in mind. You can choose between two characters and then you roam through a haunted mansion searching for journal entries and treasures. You have to find keys or levers to open doors to get to the next area. You can find different light sources that have various levels of intensity. There are ghost and gouls throughout the game, some of which are pretty spooky... overall, it was pretty fun. I would have liked for it to be more lengthy in play. It also bothered me that you can not change the camera angle to see around the room better, the camera angle is permanently set from above pointing in a northern direction (top of the screen). In other-words your character moves up, down, left, right or at a diagonal in a stationary screen.
