pig in a poke
This device costs way too much for what it can / does do. I first tried it on Win XP Pro (MCE2005) and the product worked outside of MCE OK but inside MCE can only get analog input. An Analog unit would be much cheaper solution. Most people that have MCE and use it are people that want simple; which is what Microsoft gives you; a very restrictive do it my way ... no or else. I then installed the unit on a new Vista Premium (incluses Media Center) and it will NOT work outside of MCE. Inside MCE you can get HD Over The Air OR analog (composite / svid) but not both. The WinTV6 software will not install at all from the CD and the updated download installed but won't run. Furthermore, I could not get the included IR blaster to be recognized by MCE so if I had not already had an HP approved IR interface I would not have been able to even test the analog under MCE senario. The unit only compresses (MPEG2) analog inputs. So you do need a heafty machine to process HD signals. Managing Microsofts MCE file format (drv-ms) is also a pain. I'm still looking for a Video processing package that will accept it directly. The video tools that come with Vista are pretty lame.
