Performance

I run a Pentium III 733 Mhz, with 7200 RPM hard drives. For the price, this is nicest video capture card I have ever owned. As for capturing video, the Hardware MPEG2 encoder does well, and VERY significantly reduces CPU usage over other software encoders. While recording, I have never had even a single lost frame as far as I can tell. Note: While recording, the picture may sometimes flicker as though it may have dropped a frame, but when I review the recording, it looks perfect. As for picture quality, I can only comment on capture from the built-in tuner connected to cable tv, which looks great. Overall, I recommend this card at the price.

The PVR-250 from Hauppauge is the best PVR you can get for standard definition television (besides the PVR-350, of course). Picture is of the highest quality, and recording takes nearly zero CPU power since it's a hardware encoder. All your computer has to do to record is write the MPEG file directly to the harddrive rather than taking the raw tv signal, converting it to MPEG, then writing it to the harddrive. The included software isn't the best in the world, but there are plenty of 3rd party applications that specifically support the pvr-250 (that tells you how popular this particular model is). The included remote and remote software is fairly powerful. It allows you to send commands to other windows programs as well as the hauppauge programs. It adheres to the RC5 standard, so with a little effort, you can replace the remote with a JP1 compatible universal remote (like the One For All remote) if you like. Some computer knowledge is required to customize the remote system, however, but it's nice that it's possible. If you're looking for a good PVR, whether it's just to record the occasional program, or if it's a full fledged HTPC for a tivo-like experience, this is the one to get. Buy with it a good 3rd party application like Beyond TV or SageTV
