This fictional account based on real events makes for an impressive piece of cinema, notable for its incredible tank battles...Featuring a massive amount of war machinery, this is a film of epic scale with exciting battle sequences matched with the cold fear that Robert Shaw generates as a merciless German commander.

[Wrong] The bleak and grim nature of the story is accentuated by the black and white cinematography. Hitchcock felt compelled to let the audience know what to expect by introducing the film himself, which would be his only speaking role in any of his features...Henry Fonda's innocent yet nearly convicted character may have served as the inspiration for his role in 12 Angry Men the following year. Fonda produced as well as starred in that film, which eventually became one of the best known of his career. Fonda's characters were often associated with injustice, most notably in The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). - Brian Koller

[Advise] Probably my favorite film from the Boxset, I rank this with Frankenheimer's powerful "Seven Days in May" as a favorite political film. A dynamic plot shows the deceitful inner workings of Washington - Robert Leffingwell (Henry Fonda) is the president's (played by Franchot Tone) number one candidate for Secretary of State...Along with Fonda and Tone we have a dream cast of supporting player - Charles Laughton, Lew Ayres, Walter Pidgeon, Don Murray, Peter Lawford, Gene Tierney and Burgess Meredith. Typical Preminger precision heeds a forgotten masterpiece. A true gem! - Gary W. Tooze

[Mister] Given that this movie was itself based on a long-running Broadway production (with Henry Fonda in the title role there, as well), it should not come as much of a surprise that this movie is a pure acting gold mine. If I have to convince you, I should only have to say the names Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon, James (Jimmy) Cagney, and William Powell and note that in Mister Roberts they are all in fine form...On the screen, the crew's cast of characters provides a vibrant human canvas for our central players to work upon, along with a variety of others (notably the contingent of distracting nurses and a laconic shore patrol officer who hails from Alabama). - Nicholas Sylvain
