From the Publisher:
A young Cheyenne girl renowned for her seamstress skills lives contentedly with her seven brothers--until an Indian chief wants her for himself. The brothers and sister escape to the star prairies, where they form the big dipper in this Plains Indian legend. "Like the stars it celebrates, the whole book scintillates".--The Horn Book. Full color.
A picture book retelling of the Cheyenne legend that explains the origin of the Big Dipper. A beautiful Cheyenne girl is so pure that she is able to communicate with the spirits. Much to her parents confusion, she creates seven men's shirts and seven pairs of moccasins. The girl explains that she knows she will meet seven brothers in the north country, and that when she finds them she will live with them and become their sister. In the north, the girl meets the brothers and lives happily with them until they are attacked by a band of buffalo who want the girl as their own. Trying to escape the stampeding buffalos, the brothers and the girl climb so high up a tree that they turn into stars. Illustrated with watercolor paintings.
