A young woman waxes nostalgic for her girlhood
Nolwenn Leroy was only 22 when she recorded this CD, and the songs are all about the dreams, insecurities and longing of a young woman, a young girl, even. Nolwenn Ohwo! carries all of these themes with French lyrics and a chorus in English; London Fantasy describes a nostalgic visit to her old high school (la lycée) -- the title may be English, but the lyrics are in French. All in all, this is a pop album from the winner of a reality TV show (Star Academy - 2002), but don't dismiss this as American Idol fare, it is not. Nolwenn's most recent effort (as of this writing in June, 2011) is 2010's masterpiece Bretonne, which could have been seen as yet another exercise in Nostalgia, but celebrates Nolwenn's birthplace of Brittany (Bretagne) with songs in French and Breton, the Celtic language of the region, as well as Gaelic. Take this CD along with that one to see two different sides of a young, maturing artist.
